brattleboro vermontHealth Care and Rehabilitation Services of Southeastern Vermont Review

With a long history of serving the state of Vermont, Health Care and Rehabilitation Services of Southeastern Vermont is a major behavioral healthcare services provider with a history of service dating back to 1967. With facilities in Springfield, Brattleboro and Hartford, HCRS works in collaboration with over 60 state service providers, health care agencies and community organizations serving an estimated 4,500 clients per year. The most comprehensive substance abuse services are based out of the facility’s Springfield location where clients seeking substance abuse treatment can enroll in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Treatment and Staff

Clients participating in the IOP at the Springfield facility begin treatment with an initial intake evaluation. There are no detox services offered on-site. In addition to IOP, the organization also provides standard outpatient programs at its Brattleboro and Hartford locations.

Those enrolled in the IOP attend nine hours a week of group therapy, typically held in three-hour blocks three days a week. Sessions focus on education, addiction stabilization, skill building and general recovery support. Clients also have access to weekly individual therapy which, like the group sessions, are led by an LADC. Case management is also provided. The facility aims to keep group sessions small, with no more than 10 clients in attendance at a time. While 12-step recovery is encouraged, there are no on-site meetings. HCRS also offers a family program, wherein clients can attend individual sessions with family members whenever necessary.

As HCRS is a major provider of mental health services, clients participating in substance abuse treatment can expect a dual diagnosis care component to their programs. Group sessions are scheduled that address co-occurring disorders and clients can also meet with the facility’s on-staff psychiatrist. Still, it’s worth noting that in order to truly develop a mental health recovery plan that includes features like medication management, clients must also be enrolled in the mental health program.

Though the length of IOP varies based on need, the program typically lasts eight weeks followed by stepping down into the standard outpatient program, which requires attendance of fewer regular group and individual sessions.

Extras

Aftercare is available and consists of group and individual therapy on an as-needed basis which can continue indefinitely. In addition to the organization’s outpatient programs, Health Care and Rehabilitation Services also offers a host of other substance abuse-related services. Most prominent is the CRASH Program, Vermont’s driver education program for convicted of an alcohol or substance-related driving offense. The class includes an intake assessment, 10 hours of education courses spread out over a four-week period and an exit evaluation with a staff member.

In Summary

Given its long history providing behavioral health care services to Vermont residents, clients enrolled in the substance abuse treatment program at Health Care and Rehabilitation Services of Southeastern Vermont can expect comprehensive outpatient care with long-term aftercare and dual diagnosis support. In all, the accessible range of behavioral health services combined with the network of facilities makes Health Care and Rehabilitation Services of Southeastern Vermont a solid choice for those seeking flexible outpatient care.
