Healing with CAARE, Inc. is a grassroots, non-profit organization in Durham, North Carolina. CAARE, which stands for “Case management of AIDS and Addiction through Resources and Education,” has expanded far beyond the three services in its acronym since its initial conception in 1995. This facility, founded by Dr. Sharon Elliott-Bynum, offers substance abuse treatment, aiming to help serve uninsured and underinsured individuals. Its outpatient treatment plan offers structured support and a variety of types of therapy. CAARE employs an Integrative approach to healing, combining holistic techniques with traditional clinical care.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient program at this facility is offered for a minimum of three hours a day, for a minimum of three days a week. The length of time spent in treatment depends on the individual’s needs. During treatment, clients receive group, individual and family therapy, as well as drug and alcohol education groups. Groups tend to run on the smaller size, between 10 and 20 clients at a time. Detox is not available, but referrals can be provided.
Group topics include relapse prevention, life skills, parenting, communication, trauma, an introduction to the 12 steps, processing and spirituality. Individual therapy happens once a week, with the client’s primary counselor. When it comes to the 12 steps, clients are encouraged but not required to attend AA/NA meetings during their free time. Sponsorship is also suggested before a client completes treatment.
Family therapy teaches family members and clients how to communicate in healthy ways as they address such topics as boundaries and codependency. These sessions can occur on a weekly or monthly basis.
Other health services such as free mammograms and dentistry can be obtained at this facility. This organization also offers affordable housing to veterans transitioning back into everyday life.
The job search center can help all clients with the employment process.
Healing with CAARE, Inc. is able to compliment traditional substance abuse treatment with a a slew of holistic and medical services. While most facilities that offer these alternative treatments cost an arm and a leg, this program is free. Through this high quality program, clients can heal their mind, body and spirit.
