In 2014, Hazelden merged with the famous Betty Ford Foundation. The original Hazelden is based in Minnesota but its New York City division, Hazelden Chelsea, is located in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. The facility provides individualized outpatient treatment programs for clients struggling with substance use disorders as well as those in need of dual diagnosis support. Hazelden Chelsea utilizes an integrated therapy approach that includes evidence-based and holistic methods as well as the 12-step model.
Treatment and Staff
Hazelden Chelsea believes in treating the “whole person” and provides a comprehensive program engineered to heal the mind, body and spirit. Similar to the beginning of residential treatment programs, clients entering Hazelden Chelsea undergo a substance use and mental health assessment administered by a licensed addiction specialist, in order for the staff to best determine the most effective treatment program. From there, a customized treatment plan is developed to meet the client’s specific needs. To this end, the length of care varies on a case by case basis.
Chelsea Hazelden offers flexible Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and outpatient programs to meet the scheduling needs of busy clients. Outpatient clients generally participate in the same therapies as the residential programs. IOP is available during two different three-hour time slots Monday through Thursday. Extended outpatient runs 90 minutes Monday through Friday. Clients participate in individual and group therapy with evidence-based methods like CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and EMDR to treat past trauma as a component of addiction. These methods are implemented in conjunction with 12-step structure and holistic therapies like mindfulness meditation and play therapy. In addition, outpatient includes focus groups on healthy relationships and grief as well as psychoeducational classes and lectures on relapse prevention and sober living.
The Chelsea Hazelden team is comprised of social workers, case managers, addiction specialists, clinicians and counselors. Medication management is available for clients in need of dual diagnosis support.
Hazelden Chelsea believes that family members need to understand the disease of addiction in order to be most effective. To this end, the facility provides a weekly workshop that is free for families. In it, family members learn to set boundaries and take responsibility for their own health.
Aftercare is a significant component to the success of a sustainable recovery. At the completion of the outpatient program, facility staff provide post-treatment recommendations like local 12-step meetings and recovery coaching.
Hazelden Chelsea provides both a flexible and comprehensive IOP and extended outpatient program that blends 12-step recovery, evidence-based care and holistic treatment. For clients seeking a time-tested treatment with an experienced, professional staff and medication management, Hazelden Chelsea is a great option. It’s certainly a viable choice for New Yorkers wanting the Hazelden experience on the local level.
