Hawaii Sober Living and Recover CenterHawaii Sober Living and Recovery Center Review

In 2014 the nonprofit Hawaii Sober Living and Recovery Center of Kailua Kona, Hawaii, took over management of a complex of sober living apartments for men and women. Clients reside in the Mahina Townhomes, which is within a short walking distance to banks, job opportunities, health care services and a variety of stores.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Mahina Townhomes is a two-story gray colored building which accommodates approximately 40 clients who reside in gender-specific two-bedroom apartments. Each comfortably furnished unit houses four clients. The building includes two common kitchens, a living room with comfortable couches, a flat screen TV, a coffee table and a large round dining table and chairs. Residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Some clients qualify for food stamp benefits, which assist towards the purchase of groceries.

Amenities include an on-site laundry room, all utilities and paper supplies. Behind the building is a fenced lanai or patio, which includes picnic tables, patio chairs, benches and folding chairs. Durable canopies cover the cozy lanai. Outdoor lighting allows the patio to be used for evening meetings. Framed artwork hangs from the fences.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must undergo a comprehensive two-part interview with staff prior to admission. In order to be eligible for residency, they must have already been through detox and cannot be on any prescribed medications. Residents can stay as long as they want, as long as they comply by the rules and regulations, and remain clean and sober.

Requirements include attending two weekly 12-step meetings, being at weekly community meetings, attending outpatient treatment, if appropriate, performing household chores and being employed or receiving government benefits. Unemployed clients must commit to weekly community service. The curfew time varies depending on the client’s length of stay. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Those who have relapsed are removed from the premises for the safety of the other clients.

Extras

The Hawaii Sober Living and Recover Center provides two open AA meetings on the premises, both at 5 pm, on Mondays and Thursdays. Other services, besides housing include basic case management, referrals to social service agencies, and mental health recommendations.

In Summary

The structure at Hawaii Sober Living and Recovery Center allows residents a chance to work on independent life skills while being part of a tight recovery community.  For clients seeking a highly affordable, apartment based sober living in gorgeous Hawaii, this is a great choice.
