Haven4ChangeHaven4Change Review

Haven4Change is a Kentucky non-profit that operates two residential substance abuse treatment facilities for women. Based in Bowling Green, there is also a Haven4Change location about 30 miles south in the town of Scottsville. The program is open to women over 18 who are suffering from substance abuse as well as co-occurring disorders and their children who are 12 or under. In addition to individual and group therapy, medication management and an introduction to the 12 steps, this program focuses on women-specific issues and aims to help clients build life skills in recovery.

Accommodations and Food

The headquarters of Haven4Change in Bowling Green is a stately 7,000 square foot brick mansion in a quiet neighborhood that’s close to parks, schools, grocery stores and shops. The facility has a large meeting room, administrative offices and offers accommodations for up to 16 clients and their children, which is limited to two per woman. The second location in Scottville is smaller, with space for up to eight women and 12 children.

Rooms are shared with children and maybe another resident with kids a similar age. Everyone is expected to pitch in to maintain the cleanliness of common areas. Both houses have large yards with jungle gyms and daycare centers on-site that clients work in while in treatment. Meals are provided by the facility and offer nutritious options daily. There are also healthy snacks available throughout the day.

Treatment and Staff

The six to 12 month program operates on a three-phase system that begins in an orientation phase, which restricts phone calls, TV time or visitation. Each phase lessens in intensity as clients successfully move through their individualized treatment plans. Lengths of stay vary depending on each woman’s circumstances. Detox is not available, but referrals an be provided if necessary.

Treatment is based on the 12-step philosophy and requires clients to regularly attend AA or NA meetings, get sponsors and attend group sessions and individual therapy once a week. There are psychoeducational lectures and classes, relapse prevention groups, process groups and anger management. Additionally, this facility addresses gender-specific issues such as domestic violence or sexual abuse. Programming also implements trauma- informed care and CBT. During their time in treatment, clients are required to enroll in GED classes (if necessary), get a part time job to build life skills and work closely with their primary counselor to design an aftercare treatment plan.

As previously mentioned, those who need dual diagnosis support can receive medication management. There are also options for clients looking to get clean from opioids, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with methadone or Vivitrol.

The treatment team at Haven4Change includes a consulting physician, nurses, psychiatrists, case managers, peer counselors, LCSWs and MFTs.

Extras

Additional services include domestic violence counseling programs and HIV education. Haven4Change’s family program includes a weekly group session of education and counseling for loved ones.

In Summary

Haven4Change provides a unique safe environment for women and their children. The program offers hands-on life skills and parenting classes and allows clients to keep the bond with their children while establishing a foundation in recovery. This is a great, affordable choice for women in southern Kentucky.
