The Basics
Haven Chemical Health Systems is a substance abuse treatment facility founded in 2000 by Bob Haven. With extensive experience running chemical dependency programs throughout Minnesota as well as programs in California and New York, Haven now runs a state-wide network of substance abuse treatment facilities. The first Haven component was opened in Woodbury, then three outpatient programs have subsequently opened in Shakopee, Cloquet and Waconia. Residential treatment is available as well, with three homes available for both men and women. The Shakopee location offers standard outpatient treatment as well as a monthly DUI program.
Treatment and Staff
Prior to full enrollment in treatment, all clients must schedule an appointment for an assessment. The appropriate level of care and the frequency of attendance is determined so an individualized treatment plan can be developed. Treatment sessions are available both during the day and the evening to accommodate work, life and family schedules and obligations.
Three times a week, clients attend three-hour group therapy and psychoeducation classes. As the client progresses through treatment, they may reduce attendance twice-weekly and eventually down to once per week.
All therapeutic activities are facilitated by LADCs who utilize CBT practices. Clients learn to implement positive coping skills and relapse prevention strategies to stay sober. In addition to group sessions, clients attend individual therapy when appropriate and may also attend family therapy if their therapist recommends. All treatment plans are flexible and adjusted as clients progress.
The DUI program is available in two different formats: an eight-hour class and a more intensive 16-hour program. Enrollment is dependent on the client’s needs and their court requirements. Typically, clients must attend 12-step meetings to support their recovery programs.

If any additional services are needed, Haven Chemical Health Systems offers a range of additional mental health services. If HCHS is not able to provide, references to other resources are available through the clinical staff.
In Summary
The Haven in Shakopee offers a standard adult outpatient track as well as DUI programming for low-level offenders. All techniques and program planning are client-centered so that each individual can reach their recovery. As part of a state-wide network of treatment facilities, those with more acute addiction issues may access case management services, residential treatment or Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) at one of The Haven’s sister facilities.
