The Haven at Pismo Review
Located about halfway between LA and San Francisco, on California’s beautiful Central Coast, The Haven at Pismo offers private detox and residential treatment for adults struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. This luxury treatment experience is gender specific, holistic and individualized through evidence-based therapy methods and specialized treatments like equine therapy.
Accommodations and Food
The Haven has three facilities, one for detox and two for the residential treatment, all of which offer state of the art amenities. The detox facility is called The Pines and is a home-like environment that is peaceful and quiet. The private rooms with queen beds and bathrooms allow for maximum comfort while experiencing safe, 24-hour monitoring by a medical staff. After the detox process is compete the clients move into the residential program, which is separated by gender.
The women go to the Mesa House, the men Solana House. These residences, which are large, modern homes, accommodate up to six clients in each in both private and semiprivate rooms. The luxury housing includes salt-water pools and Jacuzzis, spacious living rooms with flat screen TV’s mounted on the walls, plush love seats and leather couches, fireplace, large decks overlooking the ocean. Gourmet food with menus put together by an on staff nutritionist and prepared by an on-site chef for optimal health made from fresh, organic ingredients and local produce are served three times a day along with healthy snacks throughout. Along with the delicious food The Haven offers nutritional counseling so clients can learn what kinds of foods work best for their bodies.
Treatment and Staff
The programs offer individualized treatment with group and individual therapy offered several times a week, as well as experiential therapeutic activities. The groups are co-ed and small in number, usually around six clients with one therapist. Group therapy focus covers coping skills and relapse prevention, and psychoeducational lectures and classes. Dual diagnosis groups are also provided along with medication management services and regular visits with the staff psychiatrist.
Traditional therapeutic approaches like CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), the 12 steps and Celebrate Recovery principles are incorporated into specialized and holistic treatment options. Equine therapy, art and music and hypnotherapy as well as adventure therapies, like kayaking or rock climbing are regular activities. The programs run between 30 to 90 days.
The clinical and medical staff at The Haven work under the guidance of medical director Dr. Ken Starr who brings over 16 years of experience working in the addiction field. There are also therapists and nurses on staff whose credentials include CADC, SAP and LPN.
Extras
The Haven offers family and couples counseling on an individualized basis in a private setting.
Clients enjoy several recreational and therapeutic activities like surfing, sailing, biking and playing Bocce ball at the on location course. Daily meditation is lead on the deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and weekly yoga classes are held at the residences. Access to a private gym is included, as well as massage and acupuncture services.
