Haus Recovery Review

Located in Santa Monica, California, Haus Recovery offers co-ed sober living in a beautiful home just two miles from the beach. Haus Recovery was founded in 2016, by Paul Kaufman, who has worked in treatment for more than a decade. Kaufman previously founded Riviera Recovery in Malibu. He credits his success in long-term recovery to spending six months in transitional living after treatment, which inspired him to create structured sober living programs.

Accommodations and Amenities

Haus Recovery accommodates a maximum of 10 clients, with single and gender-specific double rooms available. Queen or full beds are topped with comforters, and the rooms feature cozy décor with nightstands, small decorative lamps and dressers. Amenities include WiFi, TVs with cable and laundry facilities. House managers live on the premises.

The house is beautifully decorated, with reclaimed hardwood floors and modern, but comfy décor. It includes a fully equipped kitchen, pretty living room and indoor and outdoor dining areas. Residents are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Haus has weekly cooking classes and residents are encouraged to help with the vegetable garden in the backyard.

Rules and Regulations

Typically, Haus accepts men and women who have graduated from primary care at a drug rehab, and who have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety. Potential applicants undergo a comprehensive interview and must pass a urine drug and alcohol screening. Upon acceptance, new clients undergo an orientation session with the sober living director. The recommended length of stay is six months but the minimum is three months. Each resident is assigned a case manager who is a CADC. Working closely with clinicians, therapists, family, support personnel and the client, case managers track progress, verify that treatment plans are followed and assure that recovery goals are met.

While living at Haus Recovery, residents must remain active by volunteering, engaging in physical activities and attending recovery meetings. During the first 30 days of their stay, clients must attend five weekly AA/NA meetings. Additionally, they must abide by a 10 pm curfew, seven days a week. After that time, curfew is midnight seven days a week. After 30 days, clients must attend a minimum of three weekly 12-step meetings, including the house meeting, which has some recovery components.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted, and residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately to ensure the safety of the household. Those who refuse testing suffer the same consequences as those who have tested positive on the tests. Other forbidden behaviors include socializing with old buddies, exhibiting violent or abusive behavior, engaging in intimate relations with another resident. Participation of assigned household chores is mandatory, to ensure that residences are clean and tidy.

Extras

Haus organizes weekly group recreational activities like hiking in the mountains, running, biking, surfing and skating along the beach. There are also weekly recovery meetings at the beach.

In Summary

Haus Recovery offers a high-end sober living option with the support of a built-in community. The house is located in close proximity to many job opportunities, public transportation and 12-step meetings. Additionally, staff is on hand to offer residents ample support. At Haus Recovery, residents are in caring, capable hands.
