Abilify is the brand name for aripiprazole, a chemical that was originally developed to treat patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Abilify was originally sold acknowledging common side effects such as weight gain, headaches, agitation and insomnia, however, doctors began to realize that there were much more serious cases as well.
According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, many patients who were put on Abilify later developed gambling disorders that they hadn’t shown any indication of having in the past. The prescription drug may have led others to similar self-destructive behaviors, according to a piece in The Daily Beast.
