Harris House Review
Harris House is an affordable drug rehab located in the heart of St. Louis. Founded in 1961 by a team of medical professionals committed to providing affordable and effective addiction treatment, it offers inpatient treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and transitional care. Its residential treatment is an affordable program that utilizes a mix of evidence-based therapy, 12-step recovery and holistic practices.
Accommodations and Food
Harris House’s residential facility is a state-of-the-art red brick building on a tree-lined street. Rooms are shared with roommates of the same gender and simply decorated, with twin beds and white walls. TV, personal cell phones and computers are allowed during down time.
The food at Harris House is nutritious. Every day, a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu is posted outside the cafeteria with several options for those with dietary restrictions (including vegetarian). Sugar, snacks and caffeine are permitted.
Treatment and Staff
There are several treatment programs available at Harris House but the most intensive and highly recommended is the 28-day inpatient program. The recovery model used at Harris House is based on the 12-step philosophy and supplemented with medication management, CBT and group therapy. Exact treatment details for individual clients differ, as Harris House uses the individualized treatment plan approach. But a typical day includes individual counseling plus two groups in the morning and three group sessions every afternoon. Group sessions can be either educational—covering basic areas such as trigger identification and relapse prevention—or therapeutic.
Detox takes place on site for an extra fee of $500. Dual diagnosis support is also available, with individual treatment tailored toward those who may be suffering from depression, anxiety disorders or bipolar disorder.
The staff consists of LCSWs. There are roughly 30 clients at a time and 10 staff members.
Extras
Recognizing that addiction is a family disease, Harris House has a family program, too. Families are invited to participate in at least two family counseling sessions per week. Although clients are often busy with program activities, they are allowed to have visiting hours on Sunday afternoons.
Meditation and yoga are offered for clients who wish to add a holistic component to their treatment.
There’s an inpatient work program for those who must continue working and, as previously mentioned, a PHP and IOP option and transitional housing. The staff encourages graduates of the program to participate in weekly aftercare groups for a year after treatment.
