chicago illinoisHardin House/Drexel Counseling Services, Inc. Review

A CARF-accredited facility operating on the south side of Chicago, Illinois, Hardin House/Drexel Counseling Services offers a variety of outpatient services, including an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). It also features the Hardin House for Women, a sober living facility which provides women a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment to live in while completing an outpatient program through Drexel Counseling Services.

Accommodations and Food

The Hardin House for Women is a converted two-story residential home on Chicago’s South Side. The facility is only a short drive from Drexel’s headquarters and clients receive transportation to and from the facility each day for outpatient care. Nearly all women in the house are transitioning from incarceration, with never more than 15 clients in residence at a time. Residents can expect to have one roommate each in double-occupancy rooms that come with twin beds and basic furnishings. There are shared bathrooms in the halls as well as common living rooms, a kitchen and dining room.

While there is a house manager on-staff at the home, clients take on a majority of the responsibilities at Hardin House by spearheading housekeeping chores and cooking duties. Typically residents take turns cooking throughout the week, with weekly groceries supplied either by the facility or through a pooling of residents’ food stamps. In the evenings, clients attend on-site peer-led group meetings and are also offered transportation to community 12-step meetings. Clients participating in the Hardin House program typically reside in the facilities for several months.

Treatment and Staff

After an initial evaluation, clients begin in either the IOP or basic outpatient treatment which are comprised of 75 and 25 total hours of treatment, respectively. Both programs are open to non-Hardin House clients as well. Those in IOP attend group therapy sessions up to five days a week and can expect one individual therapy session each week as well. Those in standard outpatient typically attend group sessions two to three times a week. All therapy sessions are led by LADCs.

Drexel Counseling does offer dual-diagnosis services and clients who qualify work with an on-staff psychiatrist who is available for individual counseling sessions. Medication management is also provided in addition to one group session each week dedicated to addressing co-occurring disorders. The facility is in the process of expanding its dual diagnosis services to offer more group sessions and staff. There is also a medical doctor on staff who oversees a methadone program and a nursing staff is also available to clients every day.

Extras

In addition to their outpatient services for adults, Drexel Counseling offers comprehensive outpatient substance abuse services for adolescents. There are also special family sessions available and groups dedicated to relapse preventionAdditionally, aftercare is provided in the form of a step down program with one group session a week.

Hardin House/Drexel Counseling Services also maintains separate transitional living accommodations—one for men and one for adolescent women—which mirror the accommodations of the Hardin House for Women.

In Summary

The services offered at Hardin House/Drexel Counseling Services are varied and comprehensive. Clients participating in the sober living program can expect transportation to and from daily outpatient services as well as to local 12-step meetings. Residents essentially run the homes themselves to learn independence and life skills. Outpatient services themselves are fairly standard, comprised of group and individual traditional therapy sessions led by LADCs with a growing dual diagnosis component. In all, clients can expect a continuum of recovery care through Hardin House/Drexel Counseling Services.
