Harbor Recovery CenterHarbor Recovery Center Review

Harbor Recovery Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas provides residential substance abuse treatment for men ages 18 and over. Operating under the Harbor House, Inc. umbrella, along with its sister facility Gateway Recovery Center, this has been a safe haven for men struggling with addiction and co-occurring disorders since 1966.

Accommodations and Food

HRC is a two story brick structure resembling a small schoolhouse that accommodates 30 men. All bedrooms are triple occupancy and clients share four YMCA style bathrooms. The dining hall, TV room, counseling and administrative offices are on the ground level, and the sleeping quarters are on the second. Rooms are simply but comfortably furnished with twin beds, night stands and a shared dresser. Meals are prepared by staff and served three times per day. While accommodating special dietary requests is limited, there is a buffet style salad bar option at dinner.

Cell phones and electronic devices are not permitted. Laundry room hours are from 4 to 9 pm and clients must supply their own soap. Smoking is prohibited inside the building and allowed only during break times in designated areas outdoors.

Treatment and Staff

Typical stays at HRC are between 30 and 90 days. The treatment program is a blend of the 12-step model of recovery, CBT and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET). EMDR is also available along with hypnotherapy for stress reduction.

A typical day begins with a 6 am wake-up followed by breakfast. Groups begin at 8 am and continue up until 4 pm with a break for lunch. Group topics include addiction studies, family dynamics, stress reduction, managing anxiety, peer pressure, relapse prevention, introduction to the 12 steps and—as needed—trauma therapy. Clients receive individual therapy once a week. Dinner is at 5:30 pm followed by either an on-site or off-site meeting.

Clients may choose involvement with the recovery organization of their choice—including AA/NA, Celebrate Recovery, Smart Recovery or a faith-based group. Family education day is on Sundays from 11 am to 1 pm and is facilitated by a CSAC. Visiting time follows from 1 to 3 pm.

HRC employs an all-male staff, all CDAC certified, with at least seven years of experience in substance abuse counseling. Client-to-staff ratio is six-to-one.

Extras

Harbor House Inc. is an umbrella recovery company offering treatment for men and women in separate facilities. In addition to HRC, women receive both residential treatment and sober living at Gateway, the sister facility. Men can continue their recovery at Cornerstones, a sober living home for men.

Summary

HRC offers men a structured residential treatment environment with a comprehensive blend of therapeutic modalities. While clients are expected to commit to a recovery organization, they are given the freedom to choose which path they prefer. With the option to continue their recovery in a sober living home with Harbor House Inc., men are given every opportunity to build new lives for themselves without reliance upon drugs and alcohol.
