Mexico New YorkHarbor Lights Chemical Dependency Services Review

Since 1993, Harbor Lights Chemical Dependency Services has offered chemical dependency and mental health treatment services. Options include Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), a variety of counseling possibilities, as well as state-approved DUI sessions. Located about 40 miles north of Syracuse in Mexico, New York, Harbor Lights welcomes all residents of Oswego County to its state-certified center. Treating only adults, support with dual diagnosis, compulsive gambling and developmental disabilities is also provided.

Treatment and Staff

Before receiving individualized treatment plans, clients complete assessments that take into account physical, mental, emotional, education and vocational concerns to determine their level of care. As medically monitored detox is not offered, clients needing supervised care are referred elsewhere. Dual diagnosis support is provided through medication management, as well as specialized individual counseling. Harbor Lights also offers two programs designed for those with brain injury, developmental or learning disabilities, as special considerations must be made when treating substance abuse in these clients. The programs—Safe Harbor and Life Matters—include specialized group, family and individual counseling as well as case management services.

The IOP is suitable for clients with a history or high risk of relapse. Initially, clients meet up to five days a week for sessions that last three hours, eventually reducing attendance to weekly. Individual counseling occurs weekly, though frequency is flexible. Mostly, treatment is made up of group therapy. This includes life skills training, relaxation techniques, stress reduction, communication techniques, emotional regulation and relapse prevention. Clients are introduced to 12-step programs, but not required to attend meetings.

The Evening Treatment Program utilizes the therapeutic modalities of the IOP, but is for clients needed less intense treatment. It lasts 12 weeks, with clients meeting attending sessions once or twice a week. Compulsive gambling and anger management programs can be completed separately, or as part of other treatment plans. These include group therapy, as well as education sessions that focus on recovery techniques. For adolescents and families, group and individual counseling is offered as a way of preventing the escalation of unhealthy behaviors.

A consulting physician, on-site registered nurses and numerous LCDCs provide treatment.

Extras

Across all programs, clients receive aftercare planning and implementation. This consists of continuously evaluating client’s progress toward goals and implementing new strategies. Counseling may continue indefinitely, with ongoing follow up visits and access to community services offered.

In addition to treatment programs, clients receive help coordinating legal issues (like parole, probation and social services), healthcare, job seeking and housing.

In Summary

Harbor Lights Chemical Dependency Services offers comprehensive treatment through highly structured but individualized programs. The IOP is the County’s most intensive, while the extensive techniques utilized provide a great foundation for recovery. Most unique are the programs tailored to those with certain disabilities, as, while appropriate treatment is essential, specialized programs for these populations are rare.
