Hannah HouseHannah House Review

Hannah House is a women’s only residential substance abuse treatment facility in the Maple Ridge neighborhood of Vancouver, British Columbia. Hannah House is part of InnerVisions Recovery Centre, established in 2002 by Kim and Billy Weselowski. Hannah House provides goal-oriented treatment programs that offer an introduction to the 12 steps, along with group and individual therapy and relapse prevention strategies for women who are 19 and older.

Accommodations and Food

Hannah House is a 37-bed facility in the quiet residential neighborhood of Maple Ridge, and offers both single and double occupancy bedrooms. The recently expanded residence, a large, two story home is spacious, with big windows throughout that flood the rooms with natural light. There is a state of the art industrial kitchen, dining room, therapy rooms and spaces for group meetings. There is also an on-site gym and laundry room and backyard and offices for staff, including a physician.

The food at the facility has a set menu that is able to accommodate vegetarian clients. Fresh fruit and bread is provided throughout the day as snack, and lunch and dinner are served with salad and vegetables.

Treatment and Staff

The structured program at Hannah House is based on the 12-step philosophy and is broken down into phases. Treatment is designed to last about 60 days, of which the first 35 has more restrictions in order for the clients to get used to the schedule and facility. During this time there are no personal calls or visitation allowed as the acclimation process occurs. As the client progresses and moves through step work, more privileges are allowed.

In addition to on-site AA and NA meetings daily there are several group therapy sessions per day and at least one individual therapy session per week. There is medical staff on hand that specializes in addiction that can offer one appointment per week, providing medication management for clients with who require dual diagnosis support. Therapy methods include CBT, EMDR and Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as learning coping mechanisms for relapse prevention and identifying triggers. An emphasis is placed on education and repairing family relationships, job placement and continuing care plans.

The staff at Hannah House provides care for women by women. The therapists have years of experience dealing with addiction, both professionally and personally, and are LADCs, LCSWs and medical doctors.

Extras

The clients of Hannah House participate in regular recreational activities like exercise, group outings to museums, bowling or movie nights. Every afternoon and during the weekends there is ample leisure time for clients to relax. Reading, or partaking in a crafting project or shopping trips and walks led by a counselor are common ways for the clients to relax and pass the time.

After clients complete the program there are options for some to move into a sober living facility arranged through InnerVisions and stay for up to one year.

In Summary

Hannah House strives to provide women who are struggling with addiction to feel safe, which in many cases is a long gone feeling. By giving their clients a highly structured environment that is also warm and supportive, it helps rebuild self worth and allows the healing process to begin. This is an excellent choice for substance abuse treatment in the Vancouver area and the community of Maple Ridge.
