Forty minutes south of Toronto and 40 minutes north of Niagara Falls, Habitude is a men’s-only substance abuse treatment facility in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Serving both Canadian and American clients, its programs include detox, residential and outpatient treatment, as well as aftercare. Founded in 2005, Habitude specializes in a holistic, bio-psycho-social approach to recovery. The name comes from a blend of “habit” and “attitude” and is based on the belief that developing positive habits and attitudes is essential to recovery.
Treatment and Staff
Outpatient treatment is available to men who have completed the residential program and those who don’t require the structure of 24-hour care. All programs incorporate orthomolecular medicine; which uses vitamins, minerals, essential oils and sauna therapy. After performing a full assessment, a therapist designs an individualized plan to fit each man’s addiction recovery needs. Since family relationships are an important part of recovery, there is a strong family component to the programs at Habitude. Customized family support is available for all clients and their loved ones.
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) come in several different levels. The Platinum Continuum of Care package includes a family workshop complete with a bio-psycho-social assessment with family members and a full day of individual family support and coaching. Also included are 36 sessions of individual therapy. Couples or family sessions may be scheduled by using two or three sessions concurrently. This level of care also covers monthly drug and alcohol testing kits for two years (24 tests). The Gold Continuum of Care package includes 30 individual sessions (also with the option to use sessions concurrently for couples or family therapy) and monthly drug and alcohol testing kits for one year. The Silver Package offers 20 individual sessions and monthly drug and alcohol test kits for six months. The Bronze Package is 10 individual sessions and three months of drugs tests.
Treatment includes evidence-based therapies, such as CBT, and an introduction to the 12 steps. It also incorporates some non-traditional therapies like reiki and massage. Sessions focus on building real-life coping skills by changing negative core beliefs, learning stress and anxiety management techniques, setting boundaries, conflict resolution, relationships and anger management.
The treatment team at Habitude includes Master’s-level therapists, two physicians, two naturopaths and a nutritionist. Clinicians are equipped to treat co-occurring disorders with specialized individual sessions and medication management. Habitude was founded by husband and wife team John Vereecke and Tammy Francouer. Vereecke is a recovering addict and certified counselor and Francouer is an expert on addiction and family issues.
Outpatient treatment programs are also offered for sex addiction, grief therapy and anger management.
Family programs at Habitude include a family empowerment workshop and a free monthly family group. The empowerment workshops are led by Francouer and allow loved ones to discuss the impact of addiction in a structured environment. The focus is on healthy, respectful communication and creating positive boundaries.
There is also a free aftercare/family group that meets in Burlington every Monday evening from 7 to 9 pm. Groups feature weekly guest speakers who focus on various recovery topics for approximately 45 minutes. There is an opportunity for the newcomers to ask questions and then the group breaks into two sub-groups—for those on recovery and one for family members—during the last hour.
Habitude Outpatient provides structured, alternative-style men’s-only treatment in a location convenient to the Toronto metro and upstate New York area. Its programs focus on restoring the body and mind through specialized care with vitamin supplements, evidence-based therapies and an intro to the 12 steps. There is also an emphasis on building a healthy support system, so this is a great option for men seeking to rebuild their lives and families.
