Located in Ludlow, Vermont, Green Mountain at Fox Run is America’s oldest wellness and weight loss clinic exclusively for women. Although the organization’s main focus is on weight loss, it also offers comprehensive programs that address body image and overall health from a variety of different perspectives. As a residential treatment program, the clinic includes accommodations and housing with stays ranging from one to four weeks.
Accommodations and Food
The facility is set on 26 wooded acres and has a total of 40 beds available for women in private and shared bedrooms. The facility was founded in 1973 and is housed in a former ski and snowboarding resort with beautiful scenic views. Sleeping arrangements include traditional double rooms with two side-by-side full or queen beds as well as duplexes with full and queen beds on separate floors for more privacy and separate living spaces. Every room comes with its own closet, a desk, dresser, WiFi, housekeeping services and a shared bathroom. The facility also has small classrooms, a library, a meditation room, on-site exercise equipment, a spacious dining room and comfortable shared living areas. Throughout their stay, clients are served three healthy and balanced meals a day plus snacks.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning a program, all participants go through an initial intake and assessment process to help the staff members determine their needs. While the organization has plenty of support for eating related issues, those in need of medical detox or stabilization services should seek them out elsewhere before attending the program.
Though all care plans are individualized, all residents can expect to attend busy days filled with individual and group therapy rooted in evidence-based treatment practices including CBT and DBT. In addition to the therapy focused on healthy eating and healthy body image, clients also attend educational groups on food and diet as well. Other elements of the program include individualized exercise plans with options like yoga, tabata, water aerobics, pilates, barre and more. Above all, the program emphasizes a non-diet based approach, focusing instead on holistic health, healthy eating and healthy thinking. As the program is focused mostly on healthy eating, extensive dual diagnosis support is not available and the 12 steps are typically not used.
The staff at Green Mountain at Fox Run consists of psychologists, RDNs, LMHCs, nutritionists, LCSWs and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Other special groups and services include massage therapy to help the residents relax as well as plenty of “Vermonting,” wherein clients explore the natural beauty surrounding the facility with staff members. An additional option includes the Pathways program for young women who have issues with binge eating or emotional eating—this includes treatment modules, which can be added into the other plans as needed. As mentioned, programs offer flexible lengths of stay. Once residents complete primary care, they can also work with staff members to develop step-down aftercare plans and discharge options.
Overall, Green Mountain at Fox Run is a well-known and trusted facility dedicated to teaching women healthy eating habits and life skills. Though the focus is primarily on weight loss, the program accepts women with various eating disorders and has them engage in therapy, exercise and healthy eating to build them back up. Though clients in need more intensive psychiatric help may want to look elsewhere, Green Mountain at Fox Run remains a strong resource for those in the area.
