sober living altoona pennsylvaniaGratitude House Review

Located in Altoona, Pennsylvania, Gratitude House is a sober living and halfway house for men recovering from addiction. The CARF-accredited program is run by Pyramid Healthcare, a behavioral health organization that offers outpatient and residential treatment for addiction, as well as other gender-specific and co-ed transitional living homes in the state.

Accommodations and Amenities

In a brick building in downtown Altoona, Gratitude House can accommodate up to 25 men with residents sharing double-occupancy rooms. Bedrooms come equipped with basic amenities, including dressers and shared closet space and anywhere from two to four twin beds. The facility also has a fully-equipped kitchen where residents are expected to prepare all their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

Residents are required be 18 years or older and not show any signs of having severe psychiatric issues. Days are structured around seeking employment, working, attending outpatient treatment, volunteering or pursuing an education. Additionally, group and individual therapy, using a combination of psychoeducation and 12-step principles, are part of the program. Educational sessions are offered to address relapse prevention, spirituality and nutrition. Residents are also expected to attend local AA/NA meetings. As clients work through the program, they earn additional responsibilities and trust through a system called SHOW (Surrender, Honesty, Open-Mindedness and Willingness).

Extras

For residents seeking employment, staff can help with practice interviews, researching community classes and other job-related services. The facility also offers a variety of life skills courses on goal-setting, social etiquette, coping skills and more.

On occasion, Gratitude House will have speakers come to the house to address a variety of addiction and recovery-related topics.

In Summary

Overall, Gratitude House offers a structured and comprehensive sober living experience to men in early recovery. Using the tools of accountability and peer support, as well as continued group and individual therapy, staff members guide residents through the transition from detox or treatment into living full, independent, sober lives. There is no doubt that for men in the area, Gratitude House is a strong choice for a gender-specific transitional program.
