Down in Northeast Texas, within the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex, is a little town called Grapevine—also known as the “Christmas capitol of Texas.” Part of the association of Valley Hope centers, which offers medical detox, residential treatment and outpatient programs across the US, Grapevine Valley Hope has its own 12-year-old inpatient facility for those who are in need of a qualified staff and 12-step focused recovery.
Accommodations and Food
Once touted as one of “America’s Best Places to Live” by CNNMoney.com, the city of Grapevine was named for the native grapes prevalent in the region. The Grapevine Valley Hope facility is a two-story hospital-like building with shared rooms. Clients sleep on twin-sized beds and share a bathroom. Residents play air hockey or watch television whilst relaxing on the soft, leather couches that are staged about in Grapevine’s common area—viewing times are generally after 7 pm—but if a smaller, intimate conversation is preferred, the commons has a small corner with four, big, comfy chairs surrounding a coffee table.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are prepared and served in the cafeteria—the menu changes daily. Residents enjoy meals such as bacon and eggs, tacos, chicken, pasta, meatloaf and more. A salad bar is always available during meal times. While caffeinated beverages are neither served here nor in the vending machines, clients can bring their own sodas and other drinks.
Treatment and Staff
After a three- to five-day medical detox, clients visit with the doctor, who comes on site daily. Treatment and housing are combined in this facility, where clients stay for an average of 28 to 30 days. Should residents require a lengthier stay, however, they are welcome to arrange it.
Residents receive more than 40 hours per week of active treatment therapy including individual therapy and pastoral sessions, marital, couple, family and group therapy. After being assigned a counselor, clients meet with that person several times a week for one-on-one sessions as needed. Clients also attend addiction treatment education and 12-step orientation lectures and are active in local 12-step meetings.
At Grapevine Valley Hope, family members visit daily, making it convenient for parents and siblings alike to gain a full understanding of what their loved ones are experiencing. Anytime from 10 am on, a counselor meets with the family to educate them about their loved one. Following this is a session that includes the resident and their relative(s).
Visitors may also come on a daily basis—no pre-approval needed. Residents can have visitors up until 10 pm daily (only when they themselves are not in a meeting or class). Outside electronics aren’t permitted, but several phones lines are made available to residents—unlimited phone calls are made during free time.
The daily schedule is in flux, to accommodate the family program, but generally it is easy to remember, as residents wake for a 7 am breakfast, lunch is at noon and dinner is at 5 pm. Clients are in groups, classes or individual therapy between meal times and there’s also free time between these sessions. (Punctuality is pertinent to residents’ program at this facility.) While there is no legitimate lights-out time, residents are to be in their rooms at 10 pm.
Grapevine’s facility employs 50 highly credentialed staff members—a team of certified addiction treatment counselors, chaplains, physicians, nurses and psychologists work together to meet the physical, mental, social and spiritual needs of the individual. But it is the 15 counselors who work directly with the residents—for a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-four. At this Valley Hope branch, overnight care is in the hands of one counselor and a team of nurses.
Extras
While there is no fitness program, there is a gym with a basketball hoop and space for walking, running and other cardiovascular ventures.
Bowling, roller-skating, volleyball and more are also extras offered at Grapevine Valley Hope. Off-site activities are randomly planned by the counselors and are not part of the normal weekly schedule.
