Portland MaineGrace Street Review

With locations in Portland, Bath and Lewiston, Maine, Grace Street provides Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) with medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for adults struggling with opiate addiction. Art and creative expression are core values, with clients helping shape the recovery environment. An art studio that includes a wood shop and leather making classes and a mini-half pipe for skateboarding already exist, with a digital recording studio and sculpture classes in development. Notably, clients helped design an art show that was featured in The Boston Globe and was seen by over 900 people.

Treatment and Staff

Before admission, clients receive a comprehensive assessment that determines their level of need and whether the Grace Street program is appropriate for them. Those requiring medically supervised detox or a higher level of supervision, such as residential treatment, are referred elsewhere. Dual diagnosis support is offered through medication management and individual therapy, with targeted mental health counseling offered by licensed psychotherapists.

The IOP consists of treatment five days a week for six weeks, which includes MAT for opiate users. Three board-certified doctors with specialties in addiction supervise MAT clients and oversee the administering of Suboxone, Subutex or Vivitrol. Pregnant clients may participate in this program, but all clients must be over 18. Pain management assistance is also offered under medical supervision.

IOP sessions are available at all three locations from 10 am to 2 pm Mondays to Fridays, with additional weekday sessions from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Lewiston center. Clients can attend programming at all of the centers and are not exclusive to any one. Group counseling makes up the bulk of treatment, with a number of topics covered. These include relapse prevention, healthy communication and life skills. Gender-specific groups are also offered and are helpful for clients that may feel more comfortable sharing personal details with only men or women. Additionally, individual counseling provides clients a chance to focus on targeted issues weekly with a CSAC. Staff is trained in recovery from trauma as well as some co-occurring disorders.

After completing the IOP, clients participate in the outpatient program that continues individual and group counseling, as well as medication management and monitoring. At this stage, group sessions occur weekly while individual counseling is once or twice a month, depending on client needs. Though, if requiring more support, clients can attend groups up to three times a week.

Extras

Community support includes introduction to 12-step and other recovery programs, a needle exchange program and Warehouse 55—the renovated warehouse that functions as an art studio and hosts a number of visual art classes for clients.

In Summary

Grace Street provides adult clients recovering from opiate addiction a solid treatment program. The focus on community building through art complements the traditional therapeutic modalities in a unique setting.
