Grace Home Review
Grace Home in Santee, South Carolina is the women’s facility that grew out of Hebron Colony, a faith based addiction treatment program for men in Boone, North Carolina. Since 1947, Hebron Colony has offered adults dealing with substance abuse the chance to find structure and balance within a Christian-centered program that provides a series of group process counseling sessions, individual spiritual counseling and 12-step based teachings.
Accommodations and Food
The women’s campus houses up to 16 clients who sleep in dorm-style bedrooms that are furnished with bunk beds, dressers and closets. The grounds have a chapel, lake, garden and large gazebo. Clients have access to the entire campus with some designated smoking areas. Additionally, family members and loved ones can stay on the grounds after the initial 14 day waiting period.
Nutritionally sounds food is a high priority for Grace Home, and clients can expect three meals a day that are prepared on site by staff. There are also the occasional BBQs and socials.
Treatment and Staff
Incoming clientele have to submit to a full physical before admission to the program, and can’t be in need of detox. There aren’t any medical facilities or staff members on the campus. There is a waitlist to get into treatment at Grace Home, so after all the paperwork and medical formalities are taken care of, clients are expected to call weekly before they come to the program, which shows to the staff that they are serious about getting sober.
There are daily chores and work around the campus and facilities that clients are expected to complete. Residents also participate in daily Bible study, prayer and study time. Treatment is based on the belief that the reason clients are experiencing their addiction is due to sin, so they work to discover the root cause that led them to start using substances in the first place, and begin to try to help themselves. Clients work on relapse prevention, forgiveness, communication and forming a personal relationship with God and the other clients. There are also individual counseling sessions with one of the pastoral staff.
The staff is mainly composed of residential techs, pastors and those who have higher positions within the church.
Extras
Clients are able to participate in group activities through the church.
In Summary
Grace Home works to form a like minded community with faith based values. Though there are elements of the 12 steps, the main focus is having clients find their way in the eyes of God. While this may make some potential clients a bit uneasy, the results of this program have shown that a majority of people who came through Grace Home leave with a new sense of purpose and respect for their lives.
