Morrisville PennsylvaniaGood Friends, Inc. Review

Located just across the Delaware river from Trenton, New Jersey in Morrisville, Pennsylvania, Good Friends, Inc. provides long-term transitional care for men. Catering to those in early recovery from addiction, as well as co-occurring disorders, the mission of Good Friends is to help residents establish good emotional, mental and spiritual health. Clients are encouraged to work and participate in a 12-step program, to help them acclimate back into the real world.

Accommodations and Amenities

Good Friends accommodates 25 men, inside a quaint brick farmhouse, that sits on 150 acres of lush greenery and trees. Good Friends shares the property with an agricultural farm and a golf center. Residents are paired in furnished rooms, which include old-fashioned styled dressers, vintage lamps and twin beds with country style comforters. The windows, with wide sills, are often used as bookshelves to store Big Books and other recovery literature.

The house includes a conference room, a break room and a large kitchen, where residents are served three meals a day, as well as snacks. The kitchen includes space for group and individual counseling. Amenities include Cable TV, a game room and Internet. A local peacock often frequents the premises. Staff members also live on the premises to oversee operations.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must be ages 18 and older. They must have completed a primary care program at a residential treatment facility or have undergone detox. The average length of stay is between three and six months. Requirements include attending six weekly 12-step meetings, getting and actively working with a sponsor, and getting a home group, which also involves getting a service commitment. Additionally, they must secure gainful employment, and are provided with vocational assessment, job readiness and job placement.

Other services include group and individual therapy (once per week), money management, life skills assistance, general health education and medical and dental referrals. Clients must be home by six pm, in time for dinner. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Good Friends, a zero tolerance policy is enforced and residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately. An on-staff psychiatric medical consultant provides medication management for clients with co-occurring disorders.

Extras

GED preparation and basic education tutoring is offered for clients who want to get their high school diploma.

Residents are provided with a comprehensive discharge plan, as well as sober living referrals.

In Summary

Good Friends is a halfway house, which is a step between residential treatment and sober living, so the services are more structured and comprehensive, and aimed to help men who have difficulties staying clean and sober. Insurance usually covers the cost here, however, the client must meet the halfway house criteria. Former residents rave about Good Friends, claiming that the program has saved their lives.
