Glenwood Life Counseling Center of Baltimore, Maryland, is an outpatient facility that primarily serves clients with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opiate addiction. Established in 1971, this non-profit agency provides standard outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) to adult men and women, all with a focus on relapse prevention.
Treatment and Staff
Assessments can begin with an interview that can be conducted over the phone or in-person. Assuming that all prospective clients are already sober, treatment can sometimes begin the same day as the intake assessment. For the most part, those who are new to the facility come in on a daily basis until they are stabilized. After this phase, clients generally come in three or four times a week for group and individual therapy and receive a dose of medicine to take home. There are day, evening and weekend IOP hours available, though the treatment times vary as programs are individualized to match each client’s needs. For clients receiving MAT with methadone, a daily dosage is provided which tapers down as they progress through the program. Eventually, all participants come off of methadone entirely.
Treatment modalities include a range of evidence-based treatments including CBT, art therapy and psycho-education. There are also relapse prevention groups, daily gender-specific groups, workshops, groups focusing on other harmful substances for addicts including alcohol as well as meditation. Individual therapy sessions give clients an opportunity to set goals for themselves and to design a continuing care plan. Although treatment at GLCC is not based on the 12 steps, the staff still encourages clients to attend AA/NA meetings regularly and to obtain a sponsor.
GLCC employs caseworkers, LCSWs, clinical therapists, counselors, medical doctors and nursing staff.
The family program at GLCC consists of group sessions that involve multiple families at once. There are also lectures and groups covering HIV prevention and education.
Glenwood Life Counseling Center is a facility aimed primarily at the under-served population of the city of Baltimore, with particular focus on those struggling with opiate addiction. The no-frills treatment program emphasizes MAT and is supplemented by traditional therapy and help with aftercare planning. Overall, those seeking an affordable program to get their life back on track would do well by considering Glenwood Life Counseling Center.
