Gibson Recovery Center is named for Allie Gibson, who, with his wife, helped substance abusers in the days before rehabs were on every block, bringing them into their Scott City, Missouri, home. The facility opened in nearby Cape Girardeau in 1990 and offers adult male residential treatment as well as a residential program for federal parolees.

Accommodations and Food

Residents live on a spacious campus. The dorm-like facility can hold about 22 men, who share bedrooms that are equipped with minimal furnishings and minimal storage space. There is an on-site recreation room that features exercise equipment and a pool table as well as a basketball court outside.

Clients eat three meals a day. Meals are served cafeteria style and may vary considerably, from quesadillas to steak burgers. Vegetables and salads are also served.

Treatment and Staff

Gibson Recovery Center aims to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for treatment. Its approach is individualized and follows both evidence-based and 12-step models. Adult residential clients stay up to 30 days, while parolee residents can stay up to 90 days. Both can attend up to 50 hours of treatment weekly.

Treatment begins with a social, or non-medical detox if needed, then transitions into a busy schedule of individual therapy, group therapy, medical lectures, 12-step education and meetings, addiction education and relapse prevention. Those with co-occurring disorders also have access to psychiatric evaluations, CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and case management.

A typical day begins with a 6 am wake-up, followed by breakfast and group therapy at 8:30 am. Residents then attend mostly group therapy and educational seminars throughout the day until about 6 pm. At 7 pm, they have free recreation time during which they can play basketball or use one of the exercise machines in the rec room. After that, they have to complete light chores—general tidying of common areas and things of that nature. Lights out follows shortly after.

Staff includes a contracted psychiatrist, a contracted physician, LACs, administrative staff and 24/7 nursing staff. The staff-to-resident ratio tends to be about one-to-three or less.

Extras

Families are highly encouraged to participate in the treatment process. They can attend family-geared educational sessions, activities and counseling to better understand the disease of addiction.

Gibson Recovery Center also offers outpatient treatment, which may include day treatment, evening treatment or other individualized programs that combine a variety of treatments.

Drug and alcohol offenders participating in the “drug court” deferred sentencing program can find necessary services with Gibson Recovery Center, which works with the courts to supervise client lifestyles and drug test multiple times per week as needed.

In Summary

With more than 30 years of experience and a plethora of resources, Gibson Recovery Center is an ideal choice for recovery in Southeast Missouri. Tesidents can expect to be comfortable and receive comprehensive treatment.
