The Giant Steps Program was founded in 2007 in Hoboken, New Jersey, a suburb of the New York metropolitan area. Based out of Hoboken University Medical Center, the program provides outpatient substance abuse treatment to adult men and women.
Treatment and Staff
The intake process at Giant Steps begins with an initial phone call followed by a meeting with the program’s primary therapist to help determine the client’s needed level of care. If the therapist believes the client would be a good fit for Giant Steps, he or she is placed on the program’s waiting list, which can be up to eight weeks. Staff at Giant Steps help individuals find grant money to pay for the program if they do not have insurance. Also, if someone needs a more comprehensive form of treatment, therapists can recommend outside detox or residential programs.
Giant Steps’ outpatient program lasts for 16 weeks and consists of group and individual therapy. Clients meet for group meetings twice a week and individual sessions once a week. The group meetings last for usually an hour and have roughly 10 clients per group. Although the counselors all use different therapy techniques in the groups, depending on the needs of the clients , the groups almost always include relapse prevention, education and sharing. Also, when clients enter the program they are assigned an individual counselor who meets with them regularly. These counselors can adjust the length and intensity of the client’s program based on the rate at which he or she is progressing.
Counselors also use the principles of 12-step recovery and occasionally do step work in the group meetings. Clients are strongly encouraged to attend outside AA and NA meetings, both in treatment and as a form of aftercare once it’s completed.
Giant Steps is dual diagnosis and clients with potential co-occurring disorders meet with an on-site psychologist once a week. The organization also offers a weekly co-occurring group in the evenings.
All of the counselors at Giant Steps are CADCs.
Although Giant Steps does not offer an official family program, clients can request individual sessions with their family members and a counselor. These meetings focus on codependency issues and substance abuse education.
The Giant Steps Program offers affordable outpatient treatment to adult men and women in the Hoboken area. The focus on the 12 steps also allows clients to become accustomed to step work before transitioning out of the program into outside AA and NA groups. The assistance with finding grant money provides an opportunity for clients who do not have insurance to attend the program so everyone has access to treatment.
