detroit michiganGet Back Up, Inc. Review

Get Back Up, Inc. is a men’s-only residential treatment facility located in Detroit, Michigan started by former Atlanta Falcon’s player Dr. Billy Taylor. The treatment programs at this facility have served those with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders with evidence-based therapy practices using CBT and the 12 steps since 2009.

Accommodations and Food

The residential living facility consists of three large buildings with 160 beds and a total of 30,000 square feet. Facilities are set up dorm-style with each room accommodating six to eight residents on military-style bunk beds. There are several bathrooms throughout the facilities with multiple stall showers, all of which are shared. There is a large kitchen on-site as well as offices, meeting rooms and a recreational area where clients can work out. Bedrooms are large enough that everyone can have a place for clothes and personal items. While cell phone and computer usage is not allowed at the facility, there are floor phones in the common areas. All bedding and cleaning supplies are provided on-site as well.

Clients can prepare meals in the facility’s kitchen and are responsible for shopping for their own food. Each resident is issued a food card when they arrive for treatment (for an additional cost). As clients progress through treatment they also earn privileges including day or weekend passes. Off-site activities like movie nights, bowling and basketball become more frequent later in the program as well.

Treatment and Staff

The treatment at Get Back Up is a combination of evidence based therapy and the 12 steps, integrating education into programming though group and individual therapy. Before treatment can begin, clients must go through an initial assessment. While there is no set amount of time clients must commit to the programs, it’s common for most clients to stay for about three months. Still, stays can range from three months to a year. Individualized treatment plans vary by the intensity of each client’s addiction.

Programs typically consist of three to four group sessions daily and one weekly individual session. Treatment typically includes CBT, relapse prevention, coping skills and psycho-educational sessions. There are also daily AA/NA meetings and medication management services for those with dual diagnosis issues.

The staff includes medical professionals, psychologists, LCSWs, LADCs and therapist who have specialized training in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.

Extras

There is an on-going family program at the facility where family members can receive individual therapy with clients present. Job training and placement services are offered which may include interviewing skills and resume preparation. There are also specialized groups for parenting and domestic abuse available which can last for up to a year. Recreational therapy and culinary arts apprenticeship training are available as well.

In Summary

Get Back Up, Inc. was founded out of the desire to educate and enhance the lives of young men who may not have had a chance to make those changes otherwise. The staff are professional and credentialed and there is a range of programs available to choose from. For men in Detroit looking to recover in a residential environment while developing a sober community, Get Back Up, Inc. is a facility worth considering for drug and alcohol treatment.
