The Meadows Gentle Path Review
Located in Wickenburg, Arizona, Gentle Path is a men’s only residential treatment facility operating through The Meadows network of care centers. It treats sex addiction and other compulsive behaviors. Gentle Path uses a multi-phase treatment plan combined with a series of evidence-based approaches including the 12 steps and holistic methods. Gentle Path was founded by Dr. Patrick Carnes, who has over 30 years experience working with clients with sexual dysfunction and addiction.
Accommodations and Food
The residential facility sits on over 35 acres in the Western community of Wickenburg, close to the north edge of the Sonoran desert. The grounds are quiet and secluded, providing a sense of safety and privacy for the residents. There are several places for the men to relax with their own thoughts on campus, including a Serenity Orchard where meditations are often led. The housing unit can accommodate up to 28 men who share bedrooms with up to three clients in one room, though in some circumstances private rooms may be a possibility. The home like residence offers upscale amenities and is spacious and extremely comfortable. There are new appliances, lounges and a living room with TV, dining room and kitchen.
All meals are prepared by a classically trained chef from menus designed by a Master’s-level nutritionist. Gentle Path is able to accommodate certain allergies and special diets.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment that covers the client’s health, history and past traumas. The evaluation also facilitates both a physical exam and psychological assessment. The program runs for 45 days and is broken into six phases. During the first phase, residents receive program materials that detail what their addiction entails and start attending groups. Throughout the stages clients address why they may have their addiction and explore past experiences that may have brought it on. They are given assignments and learn how to better communicate, and stop self defeating beliefs. At the end of the six weeks they’re given relapse prevention techniques and put together a continuing aftercare plan.
Treatment includes a number of therapies, like EMDR, CBT, experiential therapy and expressive arts therapy, like music, art and movement. There is also The Meadows Model, the signature approach of The Meadows programs. This explores the clients’ actions and helps them gain healthy tools for recovery in a safe environment.
The groups are kept small in number so that men receive personal attention throughout. There are also regular sessions with a therapist on an individual basis, and spiritual counseling. Additionally clients have a wellness and holistic element to their treatment through meditation and Somatic Experiencing.
The treatment team includes a nursing staff, LPCs, MDACCs, CSATs and board certified physicians and psychiatrists.
Extras
There are weekly equine therapy sessions as well as regular Tai Chi and yoga classes. There is also a state of the art gym on site.
The family program consists of a week at the facility that includes a number of educational sessions, classes, lectures and therapy within the family unit.
