Genesis House Review
Since 1985, Genesis House of Harrisburg and Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania has offered Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents seeking help for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Programs offered are individualized and include both group and individual therapy and incorporate a combination of evidence based methods and the 12-step philosophy of recovery.
Treatment and Staff
All clients coming into Genesis House are required to first complete an in-depth assessment to determine an appropriate level of care. If it appears that a client is in need of more intensive services, they may be referred to an outside agency that offers either a detox or residential program.
Both an IOP and basic outpatient tracks are available at Genesis House. Depending on the treatment plan, clients may participate in up to three group or individual therapy sessions per week. Typically, each individual attends at least one group and one individual session per week. Treatment is based on CBT and elements of 12-step philosophy. Because treatment is individualized, other modalities used may include Motivational Interviewing (MI), DBT and EMDR.
Group therapy sessions are co-ed and are fairly limited in size, generally consisting of between eight and 10 clients at a time. The facility also provides services to those with co-occurring disorders by offering psychiatric evaluations and medication management.
In addition to the on-staff psychiatrist, there are also therapists and counselors who specialize in addiction.
Extras
Genesis House offers specialty services to clients who use injected drugs and to those who are pregnant. The facility also offers family counseling, couples counseling and groups for those with gambling addictions. Language services for Spanish speakers are available through bilingual counselors. For those with DUIs, the facility offers education and counseling services. Intervention services are available as well.

The outpatient treatment programs offered at Genesis House are a good fit for a range of clients seeking flexible help for addiction and co-occurring disorders. Individualized programming allows for each client to explore his or her personal concerns in a supportive setting with a range of evidence-based treatment methods and the opportunity to develop a recovery community through 12-step meetings.
