GBHCThe Basics

Genesis Behavioral Health Center is part of the largest health care provider in southeastern Ohio. GBHC was founded over 20 years ago as part of Genesis-Bethesda Hospital in Zanesville, about 40 miles from Columbus. The facility offers mental health services to adults, adolescents and children, as well as outpatient substance abuse treatment for adults and adolescents. GBHC introduces clients to 12-step recovery and provides dual-diagnosis support, but does not offer detox.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment for adults at GBHC begins with an assessment from which an individualized treatment plan is devised. Clients are then placed in the day or evening track of the intensive outpatient program (IOP). The daytime IOP program runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to noon. Clients begin by attending three group CBT sessions per week—Monday, Wednesday and Friday—for four weeks. They later go down to two sessions—Tuesday and Thursday—for 13 to 15 weeks. The group therapy sessions cover topics such as an introduction to the 12-steps, relapse prevention, the disease concept of addiction, family recovery, and emotional and behavioral issues.

The condensed night IOP track runs Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 pm to 9 pm and lasts six to nine weeks. Topics discussed are similar to the day IOP program, but the sessions delve further into defense mechanisms, codependency, grief and recovery, stress management, post-acute withdrawal symptoms, dual-diagnosis and altered brain chemistry.

Clients often step down from IOP into the five-week relapse prevention program, which meets one day a week for three hours. After relapse prevention is completed, clients can enter continuing care, which meets for one hour a week for six weeks. Continuing care is also available after IOP or for those who are coming to GBHC from an inpatient treatment program.

GBHC has a a five-week IOP program for adolescents between the ages of 13 to 18. Adolescent clients are guided to abstinence from alcohol and other drugs through individual therapy, group sessions and family support, as well as ongoing evaluation of goal achievement. Clients must take part in group twice a week for two hours and are subject to random drug screens. Groups address the disease of addiction, relapse, how the 12 steps can work for teens, peer influence, codependency, family issues, anger, assertiveness and aggression. Parents are encouraged to attend family sessions, which are held during the fourth week. They are also invited to discuss concerns and questions with counselors individually or in a family session at any time.

The GBHC staff has a number of nurses who conduct client assessments, while seven certified substance abuse counselors (CSAC) are on site to conduct the group and individual sessions.

Extras

On top of the standard treatment services, GBHC offers pregnancy and drug use educational classes to women who are pregnant or intend to become pregnant and have a history of substance abuse. The driver intervention program is an alternative to jail for adults 18 years of age and older. The GBHC petty theft and shoplifting course is a one-day program for adults that provides an alternative to fines or jail sentences. Alcohol and drug education and assessment are included and the course also offers limited counseling. Finally, there is also a drug-free safety program provided for clients 18 to 20 years of age who have been convicted of underage alcohol consumption or possession.

In Summary

GBHC offers a comprehensive continuum of outpatient substance abuse treatment on a sliding fee scale. This program encourages participants to adopt a lifestyle of abstinence from alcohol and other drugs through counseling, education, family support and peer support in 12-step programs. For an outpatient program, it is surprisingly thorough and flexible, with both day and evening programs available to meet clients’ needs and schedules.
