Gaudenzia Fresh StartGaudenzia Fresh Start Review

Operating under the Gaudenzia network, Fresh Start provides free inpatient treatment in Delaware for young adults between the ages of 18 and 25. Gaudenzia Fresh Start was founded in 2003 in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, and is a state-funded program.

Accommodations and Food

Gaudenzia Fresh Start has a 30-bed capacity, occupying a three-story building in an urban setting. Dorm-style, gender-specific rooms accommodate two residents apiece.

Besides the dorms, the building has a dining hall, a living room furnished with couches and a TV, and group rooms. Three hot meals are served daily, cafeteria-style, and snacks are provided. American fare is the norm, but Gaudenzia Fresh Start accommodates special-needs diets. Coffee is not allowed while sodas are provided on special events such as the rehab’s “Movie Night.”

During the week, TV viewing is limited to recovery-oriented programs and the news.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment lasts between four and six months. Medication-assisted treatment is provided and is monitored by a staff nurse. If a resident requires intensive detox services, an on-staff physician provides a referral to a local hospital.

Residents work closely with their counselors to develop individualized treatment plans. Evidence-based methods including CBT are used, and individual therapy offers dual diagnosis support. Weekly treatment includes individual therapy, daily group therapy and attendance at AA/NA meetings on the premises.

Educational groups cover such topics as relapse prevention, anger management, addiction, health issues and medications for co-occurring disorders.

A typical day at Gaudenzia Fresh Start means getting up at 6 am, followed by breakfast from 7 to 8 am. After that, there is a 12-step meeting, followed by an educational seminar at 10 am. Lunch is at 11:30 am. The afternoon schedule may include individual therapy, group therapy, AA/NA meetings, trips to a local gym, TV time and dinner at 5 pm, followed by a meditation reading and discussion.

The staff-to-resident ratio is one-to-one and staff members include Bachelor’s-level and Master’s-level licensed professional counselors, medical staff, the program director, house managers, peer specialists and a cook.

Extras

Gaudenzia Fresh Start provides a week-long intensive family program that includes therapy and educational seminars. It also offers vocational and educational planning and support.

Residents may be referred to other Gaudenzia facilities for aftercare and outpatient services. Gaudenzia’s Oxford House in Philadelphia provides transitional housing for suitable residents.

A weekend “Movie Night” event gives Gaudenzia Fresh Start  residents an opportunity to get together and watch an entertaining film.

In Summary

Gaudenzia Fresh Start offers a new beginning to financially challenged young clients suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders.
