Gateways Hospital Outpatient Review
Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center in Los Angeles began as a 12-bed facility in 1953. Since then it has grown to provide a number of acute inpatient and outpatient treatment services for adults and adolescents struggling with mental health and chemical dependency. The outpatient programs target adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 who are dealing with emotional problems but don’t need a residential program. Treatment includes group and individual therapy, psychiatric evaluation and medication management, substance abuse education and treatment and programming for family members.
Treatment and Staff
The outpatient program is available in a few different locations. There are clinic hours where a majority of clients come on a weekly basis to meet with their counselors. There are also school programs and juvenile hall options. The main function of this program is to have the young clients remain in their daily routine while receiving treatment as to not interfere with their schooling. This particular programs combines psychological, social, medical and educational services and addresses each client’s particular needs.
Many of the adolescents who participate in this program have needed intensive programming or crisis management in the past and are currently seeking a maintenance treatment. Mental health disorders, like depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, OCD and eating disorders are common within this program, as are clients with a dual diagnosis.
Treatment includes psychoeducation and life and coping skills training. There are recreational therapy options in addition to CBT, DBT and EMDR. There are also trauma-informed groups that meet weekly. There is no set amount of time that clients are expected to remain in this program, and if assistance is still needed after they age out of this level, there are adult treatment options as well. Twelve-step recovery principles are also implemented into programming.
Staff members include LCSWs, psychiatrists, psychologists and other medical supportstaff.
Extras
There are family counseling and educational programs provided on an individual basis. Most of these treatments take place on the main campus in the Echo Park area.
In Summary
The most important goal with Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center’s outpatient program is that all clients are able to remain in their homes and continue with their education with as little disruption as possible. To that end, it works with a dozen or so location schools to provide wrap around services on an ongoing basis. Gateways and its many offerings are a valuable contribution to the Los Angeles recovery community.
