With locations in Shawnee, Chandler and Stillwater, Gateway to Prevention and Recovery has been offering mental health and substance abuse counseling services to the residents of central Oklahoma for nearly thirty years. Gateway began with a group of concerned citizens banded together and hired addiction professionals to prevent and treat substance abuse in the community. It has since earned CARF-accreditation and has expanded to include mental health counseling as well. The program at the headquarters in Shawnee offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as standard outpatient programs for substance abuse. Services at the other locations are limited to one-on-one counseling.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients work with their primary counselor to create an individualized treatment plan. Both the IOP and basic outpatient programs are progress-based and those who begin treatment in the IOP may step down to standard outpatient after several weeks of successful treatment. In the IOP, clients meet for group therapy three times a week and individual therapy as needed—usually once each week. Clients in the basic outpatient program typically attend group therapy once or twice a week and schedule individual therapy as-needed.
Groups have eight to 14 participants and are led by licensed professional counselors with LADC credentials. The foundation of group therapy is built on CBT skills and groups explore relapse prevention, conflict resolution and coping skills. Counselors are qualified to discuss co-occurring disorders in groups, but those who need specific support for dual diagnosis are referred to an affiliated mental health clinic for therapy and medication. Twelve-step and other peer support meetings are not required in either program, but are strongly suggested.
Upon completion of treatment, each client works with their counselor to create a post-treatment sobriety plan that may include a commitment to 12-step meetings and/or seeking additional therapeutic and supportive services.
Gateway to Prevention also provides school-based substance abuse prevention education, life coaching and family therapy.
Since 1985, Gateway to Prevention and Recovery has been committed to providing addiction education and facilitating the recovery of residents in Shawnee and nearby communities. With its long history in the community and expanding mental health services, Gateway to Prevention can offer residents treatment options and community support that extends beyond the scope of their outpatient program.
