Gateway Rehab: McMurray Review
Gateway Rehab is a network of detox, outpatient, residential and transitional care substance abuse treatment facilities in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Gateway Rehab was founded in 1972 by Dr. Abraham Twersky, a medical doctor who has authored 60 books and become a well-known lecturer on addiction.
Its south location is in McMurray, a small township 14 miles south of Pittsburgh. With both a Partial-Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), clients have access to several levels of outpatient substance abuse treatment.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are placed in either the PHP or IOP track. PHP clients attend treatment Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm. The duration of the program is usually four to six weeks, depending on progress. Days are spent in group therapy and clients also receive individual therapy twice each week. Attendance at 12-step meetings is a requirement of treatment at Gateway South. Each client works with their assessment counselor to decide the duration and frequency best-suited to their stage of recovery.
Clients in the IOP attend either daytime or evening group therapy three days a week for three hours each day. Currently, IOP groups meet each morning from 9 am to 12 pm. Evening groups are available on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9 pm. Clients in the evening program may elect to forgo individual therapy if approved in their assessment. The duration of treatment in the Gateway South IOP is 12 to 16 weeks.
The treatment team at Gateway South includes Master’s-level therapists such as MSWs and LPCs. Groups usually have 10 to 15 participants. While co-occurring disorders may be addressed in therapy, clinicians at Gateway are not equipped to provide medication management for clients with dual diagnosis, so clients requiring it are referred to outside mental health facilities.
Extras
Upon completion of their program, clients may choose to attend the weekly aftercare group meeting.
Gateway Rehab has also developed a motivational app—called 12:01—to help clients who have completed treatment. It also features a motivational recovery-oriented Thought of the Day on its website.
