Gateway Rehab: Monroeville Review
Gateway Rehab is a network of outpatient, residential and transitional care substance abuse treatment facilities in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Gateway Rehab was founded in 1972 by Dr. Abraham Twersky, a medical doctor who has authored 60 books and become a well-known lecturer on addiction.
Its Monroeville facility is now located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in a busy commercial area near Wilkins Township. The facility is near public transportation as well as several shopping destinations. It offers both Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) substance abuse treatment tracks.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are placed in either the PHP or IOP treatment tracks. PHP clients attend treatment Monday through Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm. The duration of the program is usually 12 weeks, depending on client progress. Days are spent in group therapy and clients receive individual therapy twice each week.
Clients in the IOP attend either daytime or evening group therapy three times a week for three hours each day. Currently, IOP groups meet evenings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 9:15 pm. Another track is available Mondays and Fridays from 9 am to 12:15 pm with a Wednesday evening meeting from 6 to 9:15 pm. Clients receive individual therapy once a week. The duration of treatment in the IOP is usually 12 weeks.
Attendance at 12-step meetings is a requirement of treatment at Gateway Monroeville. Clients in the PHP must attend at least five 12-step meetings each week, while clients in the IOP must attend at least three weekly meetings.
The treatment team at Gateway Monroeville includes Master’s-level therapists such as MSWs and LPCs. Groups usually have 4 to 15 participants. While living with co-occurring disorders may be addressed in therapy, clinicians at Gateway are not equipped to provide specialized therapy or medication management for mental health diagnoses. Referrals for dually diagnosed clients to outside mental health facilities are given upon request.
Extras
Upon completion of their program, clients may choose to attend the weekly aftercare group meeting free of charge.
Gateway Rehab has developed a motivational app, called 12:01, to help clients who’ve completed their programs. It also features a motivational recovery-oriented Thought of the Day on its website.
