Gateway Counseling Review
For over 15 years, Gateway Counseling has offered an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient substance abuse treatment in Spokane, Washington. Prior to founding Gateway, its founder—Neil Hayden—was the Program Coordinator for Chemical Dependency Services at Deaconess Medical Center for ten years. In addition to counseling services, Gateway also offers Suboxone treatment for those detoxing from opioid use.
Treatment and Staff
After a psycho-social assessment, clients are placed on the IOP or outpatient track. Both tracks are progress-based, and clients work with their counselors to step down treatment as they progress. In the IOP, clients attend group therapy three times a week. Clients in the standard outpatient program, or who are attending groups because they’ve relapsed, typically attend group once or twice a week. Individual therapy is scheduled as-needed—usually every other week.
Groups are led by counselors with CDP credentials. While they’re familiar with co-occurring disorders, clients are encouraged to work with an outside therapist or psychiatrist for dual diagnosis support. Group therapy uses evidence-based techniques such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Groups usually have seven to 15 participants.
Gateway believes that peer support is an important element of long-term recovery and so it requires clients in its substance abuse programs to attend at least two peer-support meetings each week, such as 12-step or Celebrate Recovery meetings.
When clients have completed treatment, they can elect to attend Gateway’s weekly aftercare meeting.
In Summary
Gateway Counseling’s evidence-based therapies in conjunction with its requirement of weekly peer-support meetings ensures that clients leave treatment with both a better knowledge of how to manage their addiction and a supportive network to help build a sober lifestyle.
