Gateway Alcohol and Drug Treatment Review

Gateway Alcohol and Drug Treatment was founded in 1968 and today serves as the largest provider of alcohol and drug addiction treatment in Illinois. Gateway also has facilities in the St. Louis Metro East area. Gateway has many drug and alcohol addiction treatment options for both adults and teens, as well as those  who have co-occurring disorders. Gateway offers outpatient, residential, day treatment and aftercare programs.

Accommodations and Food

There are several inpatient homes within Gateway’s network. All of them are inviting spaces decorated in a simple but homey fashion. Each resident has a single bed in a double room which has two desks and ample closet and dresser space. There are multiple common areas, including sitting rooms with flat-screen TVs and a welcoming cafeteria where residents can eat and interact. The grounds are well-kept and green, and there’s plenty of outside space to sit and relax.

Food at Gateway houses is served family-style, and there are many different options, including salads and various side dishes and proteins. Dietary restrictions can be accommodated when necessary.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment for both outpatient and inpatient is relatively similar at Gateway, all of it utilizing evidence-based practices while also encouraging 12-step participation for those who are interested in attending AA or NA groups. Treatment plans are highly individualized; each client participates in one-on-one counseling sessions at least once a week depending on his/her needs. Group sessions include mindfulness-based therapy, Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care, educational groups, an introduction to the 12 steps and process groups.

Gateway emphasizes relapse prevention groups, which specifically try to help clients identify personal triggers and learn to pause before making impulsive decisions to drink or use. The focus here is to encourage clients to develop a nonjudgmental and gentle approach to their recovery with mindfulness techniques.

Co-occurring disorders are treated with integrated therapy, along with medication management and educational classes. Gender-specific programs are available as well to those who are interested.

Staff at Gateway includes licensed drug and alcohol counselors, social workers and psychiatrists. Each client is assigned his or her own multidisciplinary team, which includes a psychiatrist, social worker, nurse and certified drug and alcohol counselor.

Extras

Gateway also offers family programs.
