The Gardens at Lake WorthThe Gardens at Lake Worth Review

The Gardens at Lake Worth is a residential recovery facility for adult and elderly men and women struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in South Florida. As a southern branch of the greater Advanced Health and Education network of New Jersey, in addition to residential treatment The Gardens offers medically supported detox and a holistic approach to recovery with a Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and basic outpatient tracks.

Located in Greenacres, Florida, The Gardens serves the communities of Hollywood, Delrey Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach County, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Boynton Beach and Broward County with substance abuse treatment programs specifically created for the increasing numbers of seniors addicted to prescription drugs.

Accommodations and Food

While treatment at The Gardens is co-ed, housing is gender-specific. The accommodations are comfortable and homey with furnished double-occupancy rooms, each with two twin beds with built-in storage drawers. The kitchen is tidy and fully equipped with modern appliances and granite counter tops. The living room comes with a TV, contemporary leather chairs and plenty of space to socialize and relax. Outside, the sunny backyard has palm trees, local flora and picnic tables where clients can enjoy the mild Florida weather year-round.

Residents are encouraged to bring casual clothes for daily use, gym clothes for exercise, beach wear and something appropriate for church. In addition to a prescription card, Lake Worth advises each client to bring about $100 for potential prescription co-pays. As is the case with many residential facilities, no cell phones or electronic devices are allowed, though clients are permitted to make a call from the house phone to check in with family or loved ones upon arrival. After that, the facility phone is available for use after a week-long blackout period.

Treatment and Staff

The residential program at The Gardens resembles a PHP in that clients attend treatment in one location and sleep in another. This is the practice at all of Advanced Health and Education’s residential programs in support of the idea that clients should be allowed a mental break by leaving one location for the other, avoiding the cabin fever associated with traditional lock-down inpatient programs.

Clients receive treatment at the main facility between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. This schedule overlaps with those enrolled in the IOP though not necessarily with outpatient clients who are often juggling work and family responsibilities while in treatment.

Therapy at The Gardens includes both group and individual therapy. Clients and therapists work together to create long-term relapse prevention plans as well. EMDR is available for those dealing with underlying trauma issues as well as addiction. Alternative treatment options such as yoga, meditation and equine therapy are available. Different modalities are assigned on a case-by-case basis. Clients with co-occurring disorders like depression and anxiety may require prescriptions and medication-assisted treatment is available.

The Gardens supports the 12-step model of recovery and encourages clients to continue working a program after graduating from treatment. PHP clients also attend off-site meetings while in treatment. A focus on personal spirituality is encouraged though not required. Staff provides transportation to local churches for those who wish to attend.

The clinical and some of the operational staff at the Gardens have backgrounds in counseling. The Gardens’ primary therapist has a degree in Psychology and is certified Addiction Professional and the resident case manager is a CADC. The case manager assists clients with their transitions after treatment. There is a full-time Medical Director who practiced medicine for 25 years before earning his Master’s in Public Health and entering the Addiction field. The Director of Client services who oversees intake and assessment also has a degree in Addiction counseling.

Extras

The facility offers courtesy transportation for local residents and rides to and from the airports at Palm Beach International and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood. The Gardens also has a blog for clients and loved ones to keep up with changes at the facility.

Clients also enjoy exposure to a wide variety of alternative treatment options including yoga, equine therapy and mindful meditation as well as continuing care after treatment. Aftercare ensures clients receive referrals to therapists, support groups, trauma-specific resources and alumni.

In Summary

As a branch of the greater Advanced Health and Education network, programming at The Gardens at Lake Worth is relatively streamlined. This is an evidence based treatment facility in that it encourages clients to learn about the 12 steps and participate in group and individual treatment. However, a holistic approach exposes clients to alternative methods as well. In all, The Gardens at Lake Worth is a viable program for area adults and seniors seeking recovery and community.
