Friends Of Bridge, Inc. Review
Founded in 1970, Friends Of Bridge, Inc. is an outpatient counseling facility located in Valley Stream, New York and serving Nassau County’s South Shore and surrounding areas. It is licensed by OASES (Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services), Nassau County Department of Mental Health, Chemical Dependency and Developmental Disabilities Services, the Inc. Village of Valley Stream and New York State legislative grants, and treats adults and adolescents using a combination of education, empowerment and abstinence for substance abuse.
Treatment and Staff
Recovery here begins with a telephone interview and assessment by Bridge’s Medical Director. Psychiatric evaluation and detox are by referral. The facility provides medication management, psychiatric evaluation when indicated, random urinalysis and breathalyzers and family and couples counseling if needed. Treatment for co-occurring disorders is also available.
Bridge offers several programs to address a range of needs, ages and stages in recovery. The day program—recommended for those in early recovery—convenes from 10 am to noon on Monday through Thursday. In group and individual therapy, clients learn about relapse prevention, socialization and coping skills. Also emphasized is the Bridge philosophy—recovery is a lifelong process, requiring diligence and hard work.
Once clients have a solid foundation for a sustainable sober lifestyle, they transition into the evening program. This is a less intensive program—meetings are held from 7:30 to 9 pm Mondays and Wednesdays—for those who are farther along in recovery work or for clients who are unable to attend daytime sessions because of their jobs. Finally, Bridge also offers its 12-week Minimal Track Program for adults from 6 to 7 pm Wednesdays, which includes psychoeducation and group counseling.
Bridge also has a treatment program for adolescents, with sessions from 10 am to 3 pm Mondays through Fridays. In addition to the content offered in adult programs, it includes parent/guardian involvement and life skills education. During treatment, students are tutored by state-certified teachers and teachers assistants in course work as well as college prep as well as teachers trained in special education, for those who require it.
AA/NA meetings and self-help groups are recommended for additional support for clients in all programs.
With a staff-to-client ratio of one-to-seven, Bridge’s team is comprised of certified professionals in addiction medicine, social work, alcohol and substance abuse counseling, marriage and family therapy (MFT), behavior modification , CBT and mental health disorders. Credentials of staff include LCSW, CASAC, LMHC and MD.
Extras
Counseling groups for family and significant others are offered from 7:30 to 9 pm on Wednesdays.
Additionally, vocational evaluation and education are undertaken in conjunction with Nassau County Work and Gainful Employment Services (WAGE$) and the New York State Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID).
