Fresh Start Recovery Programme offers Christian-based substance abuse treatment services for men and women, in and around Perth, Western Australia. Located about 50 miles east of Perth, the treatment program serves adult men. Fresh Start offers medically monitored detox, short-term residential, outpatient and transitional housing services. All Fresh Start clients have access to general health services at the clinic located nearby in Subiaco.
Accommodations and Food
The Fresh Start residential treatment center for men is located just outside Perth in the remote, but quickly growing town of Northam. The facility is located on a large property, with a three-story building, garden and chicken run. Each resident has his own air-conditioned room, with a common area for TV, meals and relaxation. Three healthy meals a day and snacks are provided and prepared by clients in a rotating roster.
Treatment and Staff
Clients must complete detox before coming to Northam and Fresh Start offers a program at the clinic in Subiaco. This process typically lasts three to five days. Medication management is available—the on-site nurse must administer all prescribed medications. Dual diagnosis support is offered for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Each day at the Northam residence begins with Bible study and quiet reflection. Clients are given opportunities to participate in scheduled outdoor activities like swimming and group sports, as well as attend Christian group therapy and church. Clients are required to maintain the property and their own areas as part of the therapeutic program. They are not permitted off the property or any contact with loved ones for the first two weeks. After this time, they may have limited access to phones, but not their own cellphones. After 14 days, residents may be allowed supervised visits off-site on a case-by-case basis.
Additional services offered by Fresh Start include an outpatient relapse prevention program, which is offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays. All clients first go through the medical clinic, which offers a range of health services. A methylnaltrexone implant is introduced for clients with opiate addiction and other chemical dependencies are also medically managed. Services include Hepatitis C treatment and mental health care for clients with dual diagnosis. Clients participate in three hour sessions that include individual therapy, chaplaincy and group. They are also encouraged to attend off-site 12-step meetings and other support groups.
A variety of recovery homes are available for women and men that do not need the residential treatment offered at Northam. These short-term facilities provide crisis housing, temporary living spaces and transitional living for those in need. These homes are a stable environment safe for clients to live in while not jeopardizing their recovery. Medical care and 24-hour supervision is offered as support in these homes.
Staff includes a doctor, mental health nurse, psychologist and chaplain who supervise 24/7. At least two staff is present at all times.

For the men at the Northam facility, there is a gym available, as well as pool table, ping-pong, darts, BBQ and outdoor area.

Fresh Start Recovery Programme offers a range of essential therapeutic options for those struggling with substance abuse in Western Australia. While the residential facility is only available for men, women and men not requiring such intensive treatment are able to participate in the outpatient program and transitional living. The cost of treatment is affordable, at about $6,000 per client. That fee covers the entire length of the program, from detox to transitional care, however long that may be. While the Christian-based counseling and chaplaincy may be a deterrent for some, Fresh Start only requires abstinence, and not a conversion the Christian faith to complete the program.
