fremont-hospitalFremont Hospital Review

A large 96-bed behavioral healthcare and psychiatric facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, Fremont Hospital offers an extensive dual diagnosis, Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adolescents, between 12 and 17-years old, and adults. While some inpatient services are offered, these are on a short-term basis (between five and seven days) and for stabilization purposes only.

Accommodations and Food

Since the facility is mainly an outpatient program, there are no accommodations to report. However, the facility is equipped with an on-site gym and meals are provided and served in the cafeteria. Breakfast typically consists of cereal, fruit and yogurt while lunches vary; but all menus have rotating options.

Treatment and Staff

The adolescent  and adult IOP is offered on three tracks: psychiatric, chemical dependency and dual diagnosis. The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHPis the most rigorous, consisting of a five-hours-a-day, five-days-a-week. The rest of  the program l are offered Monday through Friday with a minimum of three hours a day.

Specific schedules depend on a client’s individualized treatment plan but on an average day, residents attend individual and group therapy utilizing CBT and psychoeducation.  There are meditation sessions, nutrition classes and daily 12-step meetings available as well. The average length of stay is three to six weeks.

Though no medical detox is offered, temporary inpatient accommodations are offered, complete with medical staff,  for those arriving in the midst of a crisis. Psychiatric visits are available, including a continued evaluation of a client’s medication, and each resident is assigned their own caseworker. Licensed therapists handle the bulk of the daily workload, with a staff of registered nurses available as well.

In Summary

With individualized treatment plans, extensive access to medical staff and a structured daily schedule, Fremont Hospital conducts itself more like a residential treatment program than an IOP. So for those local to San Francisco’s Bay Area, this program may be a great compromise between the two, allowing clients to focus on their recovery during the day and then return to their families at night.
