Free by the Sea in Ocean Park, Washington, offers residential and outpatient substance abuse services for adults ages 18 and over. Steps away from the Pacific Ocean and its sandy beaches, Free by the Sea is situated on five acres of waterfront property along Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula. Peaceful and serene, the setting is highly conducive to the addiction recovery process. Only a few short hours from Portland and Seattle, the campus is far enough from the distractions of everyday life to offer clients privacy, seclusion and time for thoughtful reflection.
Accommodations and Food
The campus is something out of Better Homes and Gardens—acres of sprawling green sprinkled with finely manicured plants and flowers surround three buildings. Two are for residential treatment and the third is for sober living. Men and women are in separate buildings and all rooms are double occupancy with a shared bathroom. The bedrooms are large enough to be a hotel suite and feature queen-sized beds, a desk and sofa and plush carpeting. Fine linens are provided and the staff launders all towels and sheets. There is a full-time cleaning crew on duty seven days per week, keeping the facility spotless.
Meals are served in the dining room, located on the first floor of the men’s house. At Free by the Sea, quality amenities are an important component of the healing experience. All meals are prepared on-site by a trained chef who uses local ingredients for quality, freshness and an authentic Pacific Northwest flavor. The chef regularly prepares meals for vegetarian, vegan and diabetic clients, as well as those restricted to a gluten-free diet.
Treatment and Staff
All clients are screened by a physician prior to admission—Free by the Sea doesn’t offer detox. Residential treatment is typically 30 to 60 days and includes group therapy, individual therapy, 12-step meetings, presentations and educational group sessions. All group therapy is gender specific. During group and individual therapy, topics include addiction education, disease and recovery, relapse prevention, life skills education, anger management, emotional regulation, family dynamics and coping mechanisms. Staff uses DBT as a way to stop negative thinking and catch triggers. A mental health class takes place twice weekly for those who suffer from PTSD, bipolar disorder and trauma. Schedules are designed around the client, meaning some people see their individual therapists more often than others.
In any case, days at Free by the Sea are busy and structured for everyone, with breakfast at 7:30 am and the first group at 9 am. Lunch is at 12:30 pm with groups resuming again at 2 pm. The schedule includes daily physical activity and twice weekly residents are taken to outside 12-step meetings.
Free by the Sea offers outpatient services to clients who have completed residential treatment. The house is located on the same property, with similar living and dining amenities. Residents are allowed to leave the facility to look for work and attend outpatient classes either days or evenings, depending on their schedules.
The treatment team at Free by the Sea includes Master’s-level therapists, substance abuse counselors and a psychiatrist.
