Free by the SeaThe Basics

Free by the Sea in Ocean Park, Washington, offers residential and outpatient substance abuse services for adults ages 18 and over. Steps away from the Pacific Ocean and its sandy beaches, Free by the Sea is situated on five acres of waterfront property along Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula. Peaceful and serene, the setting is highly conducive to the addiction recovery process. Only a few short hours from Portland and Seattle, the campus is far enough from the distractions of everyday life to offer clients privacy, seclusion and time for thoughtful reflection.

Accommodations and Food

The campus is something out of Better Homes and Gardens—acres of sprawling green sprinkled with finely manicured plants and flowers surround three buildings. Two are for residential treatment and the third is for sober living. Men and women are in separate buildings and all rooms are double occupancy with a shared bathroom. There are a limited number of single occupancy rooms available for an extra fee. The bedrooms are large enough to be a hotel suite and feature queen-sized beds, a desk and sofa, plush carpeting and an ocean view balcony. Fine linens are provided and the staff launders all towels and sheets. There is a full-time cleaning crew on duty seven days per week, keeping the facility spotless.

Meals are served in the dining room, located on the first floor of the women’s house. At Free by the Sea, quality amenities are an important component of the healing experience. All meals are prepared on-site by a trained chef who uses local ingredients for quality, freshness and an authentic Pacific Northwest flavor. The chef regularly prepares meals for vegetarian, vegan and diabetic clients, as well as those restricted to a gluten-free diet.

Treatment and Staff

All clients are screened by a physician prior to admission—Free by the Sea doesn’t offer detox. Residential treatment is typically 30 to 60 days and includes group therapy, individual therapy, 12-step meetings, presentations and educational group sessions. All group therapy is gender specific. During group and individual therapy, topics include addiction education, disease and recovery, relapse prevention, life skills education, anger management, emotional regulation, family dynamics and coping mechanisms. Staff uses DBT as a way to stop negative thinking and catch triggers. A mental health class takes place twice weekly for those who suffer from PTSD, bipolar disorder and trauma. Clients with co-occurring disorders must see the staff psychiatrist weekly while in treatment; schedules are designed around the client, meaning some people see their individual therapists more often than others.

In any case, days at Free by the Sea are busy and structured for everyone, with breakfast at 7:30 am and the first group at 9 am. Lunch is at 12:30 pm with groups resuming again at 2 pm. The schedule includes daily physical activity and twice weekly residents are taken to outside 12-step meetings. Saturday nights are for fun outings and visiting is on Sunday. Visits are permitted after one week and upon counselor approval.

Free by the Sea offers outpatient services to clients who have completed residential treatment. Clients can move into the sober living house after 45 days of inpatient treatment, while still attending group therapy and 12-step meetings as a means of support. The house is located on the same property, with similar living and dining amenities. Residents are allowed to leave the facility to look for work and attend outpatient classes either days or evenings, depending on their schedules. Clients remain in sober living anywhere from six months to one year. There is a maximum capacity of 15 residents and each room is double occupancy with a shared bathroom.

The treatment team at Free by the Sea includes Master’s-level therapists, substance abuse counselors and a psychiatrist. There are three technicians on duty 24 hours per day ensuring that residents follow their schedule. The client-to-staff ratio is seven-to-five.

Extras

Physical well-being is a key component of treatment. Free by the Sea offers volleyball, tennis, basketball, tetherball and horse shoes as part of their recreation program. Clients are also taken to the movies and bowling on Saturday night outings.

In Summary

Free by the Sea offers both residential and outpatient treatment for those struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Located on a beautiful coastline and offering four-star amenities, this facility is perfect for those who cannot tolerate dorm-style accommodations. And compared to Malibu rehabs, the price is pretty reasonable.

  1. Appreciative Mom on

My son went to Free By The Sea in July 2015 and stayed for 50 days. The facility was clean and well maintained. The staff were caring and knowledgeable. The med room is locked and staffed at all times and the staff in charge of medications are all credentialed and very caring.

The facility schedule for residents is structured and allows for just the right combination of free time and rehabilitation work. There is a gym at the facility and exercise is encouraged. Counselors are credentialed and rehearsed in the process of drug rehabilitation. Residents are strongly encouraged to interact with one another and the process of clean & sober communication is fostered in a healthy way at all times.

My son’s stay started him on the road to a better future and we are very thankful for the team of professionals at Free by the Sea!
