farmington new mexicoFour Winds Recovery Center Review

Located in Farmington, New Mexico and serving the greater San Juan County area, Four Winds Recovery Center offers substance abuse recovery care in both residential and outpatient settings. Given Farmington’s location as a commercial hub of the Four Corners region (where New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona share a border), Four Winds Recovery Center also serves clients from the Four Corners as well as the neighboring Navajo Nation.

Accommodations and Food

Four Winds residential facility is a sprawling one-story building on the outskirts of Farmington. The facility offers inpatient services to men and women over the age of 18. Because Four Winds is one of the only residential programs in the area and it keeps enrollment low (with never more than 20 clients at a time), there is frequently a waiting list of several weeks to attend the program.

Men and women at Four Winds are kept in separate dorm areas, though clients should be prepared to share sleeping accommodations with up to nine other roommates. All rooms are large and set up dorm-style with twin beds and basic furnishings including dressers and bedside tables. The men and women’s dormitories are separated by two large gender-specific bathrooms which are shared among all respective residents. There is a staff chef who prepares three hot meals a day for clients and snacks are available throughout the day.

Typically, all clients eat meals together in a large day room which serves as the main common area. There is also a computer room and several small rooms which are used for therapeutic activities. Since the program at Four Winds Recovery Center generally lasts no longer than 31 days, there are no major trips or recreational activities that take clients off the grounds. Still, there is an on-site volleyball court and clients frequently take walks around the campus during free periods. There are also trips made each week to community 12-step meetings in Farmington.

Treatment and Staff

Every incoming resident at Four Winds Recovery Center is assigned a personal LADC who aids them in developing a recovery approach that combines group and individual therapy. Treatment is evidence-based and combines CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), as well as the 12-step principles. In addition to clients attending off-site meetings, often representatives from local AA/NA meetings visit the facility to lead meetings. During their time in the residential program, clients also attend peer support groups and special educational panels and workshops, such as a Victim Impact Panel and domestic violence classes.

Dual diagnosis care is provided at the facility as well in the form of a weekly group session dedicated to co-occurring disorders. An on-staff psychiatrist visits the facility two to three times a week who provides medication management. There is also a nurse on-site five days a week from 7 am to 3:30 pm. While Four Winds previously offered detox, they have since discontinued this service.

Because the residential program is 31 days, residents begin planning an aftercare program with their counselor at the beginning of their stay. Clients typically step down to the Four Winds Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which consists of three-hour group sessions three times a week and at least one individual session every two weeks. The program lasts for a minimum of 12 weeks. The facility also offers a standard outpatient program, which consists of weekly 90-minute counseling sessions for a minimum of 24 weeks, with individual sessions scheduled on a case-by-case basis. Both of these outpatient tracks focus on relapse prevention and can be extended as needed.

Extras

In addition to group and individual therapy and educational seminars, Four Winds also offers a variety of specialty sessions for clients. While most of the activities at Four Winds Recovery Center are co-ed, there are also gender-specific group sessions and family sessions provided as well. Clients also have opportunities to participate in art therapy.

In Summary

While the Four Winds Recovery Center residential program is relatively short, clients can still expect a comprehensive and structured program during their time in residence. The facility offers dual-diagnosis care and comprehensive aftercare through an IOP. While clients shouldn’t expect a great deal of privacy during their stay, Four Winds Recovery Center is ideal for those seeking a recovery community during and following residential treatment.
