Four Winds Hospital has two locations in New York state. Its Saratoga Springs hospital is located 30 miles north of Albany and provides inpatient and outpatient mental health treatment. Its Katonah hospital is 50 miles north of New York City and focuses on inpatient care. Both facilities offer treatment to adults, adolescents and children.
Four Winds opened its doors in 1978. It was created by Dr. Samuel Klagsbrun, who wished to provide psychiatric care in a comfortable and dignified environment, a place to which clinicians would want to “send their patients, their own relatives.”
Accommodations and Food
The Katonah facility has 175 beds and the Saratoga Springs facility has 88 beds. Both campuses feature traditional buildings designed to make residents feel comfortable and serene. They have ample grounds for walks and recreation and multiple gathering areas. Most clients have semi-private or private rooms and can watch TV in the buildings’ common areas. Meals are taken in residents’ rooms or in the common areas of the units.
Treatment and Staff
All clients must have a primary psychiatric diagnosis. Minimal treatment for secondary diagnosis of substance abuse is available, but most clients in need of on-going treatment for substance abuse are referred to chemical dependency outpatient programs after they’ve completed treatment for their psychiatric diagnosis at Four Winds.
Inpatient treatment for adults usually lasts seven to 10 days; children and adolescents usually stay longer, up to 14 days. During their time in treatment, clients have daily individual and group therapy. Therapy uses CBT, DBT and psychoeducation classes to help residents develop coping skills and regulate their emotions. Clients also meet regularly with psychiatrists to monitor their psychiatric medication.
Outpatient care is offered to children and adults at the Intensive Outpatient Program (PHP) and Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) level of care in the Saratoga Springs location. PHP clients attend group therapy from 9 am to 4 pm and IOP clients attend group therapy from 12 to 4 pm three or four days each week. The average length of stay in outpatient treatment is three to four weeks.
The treatment teams at Four Winds include psychiatrists, Master’s-level therapists, RNs, nurse practitioners and case-managers. Children and adolescents also have academic tutoring each day at the on-site Teaching and Learning Centers.
Four Winds encourages families to visit residents and visiting hours are posted in each unit. Four Winds also has Pastoral Care Centers on campus at which clients can receive spiritual counseling.
Four Winds Hospital provides comprehensive psychiatric stabilization at both its Saratoga Springs and Katonah locations and outpatient mental health treatment at its Saratoga Springs location. Its relaxing, scenic campuses and compassionate staff help clients focus on their health and well-being for a successful transition to their next phase of recovery.
