Fountain CentersFountain Centers Outpatient Review

Since 1974, the Fountain Centers has been committed to helping individuals and their families who have alcohol and other drug problems. With eight locations in central Minnesota, this outpatient substance abuse program is part of the Mayo Clinic Health System and offers adults and adolescents the support and education they need to maintain long-term abstinence. Using 12-step principles and evidence-based therapies, Fountain Centers treats clients in the communities of Albert Lea, Austin, Fairmont, Faribault, Mankato, Owatonna, Rochester and Waseca.

Treatment and Staff

Groups at Fountain Centers have a maximum capacity of 12 participants. Clients entering the program must first schedule an assessment; individuals requiring detox or residential treatment are referred to the residential program at Albert Lea.

The core components of outpatient treatment draw from Motivational Interviewing (MI) and CBT traditions, with an emphasis on teaching relapse prevention skills. All treatment plans are individualized, with the goal of ensuring that each person’s needs are met. The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) lasts five months  and clients meet for group therapy on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Individual counseling is on Mondays for the first two months and then once a month thereafter. Clients are evaluated after two months and, if appropriate, transition from meeting three times a week to twice a week and then down to once a week.

The regular outpatient program at Fountain Centers integrates the 12 steps into their therapeutic practices. They also require attendance at meetings and encourage sponsorship. Using CBT, the counselors promote education and open dialogue as tools to avoid relapse. In addition to 12-step education, group therapy topics included substance abuse education, process group, goals assessment, coping skills and family group (which meets three times a month). Individuals who enroll in treatment must also consent to random urinalysis testing.

Each of the eight locations employs four CDACs who facilitate groups and see clients privately.

Extras

With a core emphasis on addiction being a family disease, families are strongly encouraged to participate in recovery. On the first Tuesday of the month, family members meet in a classroom setting and view films and a Power Point presentation about addiction and family dynamics. The following Thursday, a counselor facilitates a group session, where each member expresses their feelings about how the disease has affected them. The clients also share their own struggles with addiction.

The Austin location is the only one that offers outpatient treatment for adolescents. The curriculum is similar to the one for adults, with the exception of family group, which meets weekly. The duration of the program and transition levels are identical to the adult program, and adolescent clients are also subject to random urinalysis testing.

In Summary

Fountain Center’s outpatient substance abuse program uses 12-step and evidence-based practices, in addition to fostering the treatment of clients with dignity. An affordable cost and multiple locations make this network one worth exploring for those in the area ready to begin recovery.
