Foundation for Multicultural Solutions OutpatientFoundation for Multicultural Solutions Review

Foundation for Multicultural Solutions (also known as El Camino) offers bilingual outpatient substance abuse treatment in Tacoma, Washington. Foundation was started 15 years ago by Patricia Neagle and Carmen Murphy, two addiction counselors who decided to join forces to serve Tacoma’s Hispanic community. The mission is “to provide quality family-centered services promoting recovery from substance disorders to achieve physical, emotional and spiritual healing; through advocacy and education, counseling and treatment.”

Treatment and Staff

Foundation for Multicultural Solutions offers both standard outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) to adults and adolescents. After an assessment, clients are placed on the standard outpatient or IOP track. IOP clients attend group therapy three times each week and have individual therapy once a week. Standard outpatient clients attend group therapy once or twice a week and have individual therapy as-needed. All treatment tracks are progress-based but most IOP clients complete their treatment plan in four weeks while standard outpatient clients usually stay longer. Many clients step down from the IOP to standard outpatient as their sobriety stabilizes.

Currently, the Adult IOP is only offered in Spanish. All other programs are bilingual. Therapy groups usually have about 12 participants and are led by addiction counselors with CADC credentials. Counselors use the 12-step framework, Matrix Model and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in therapy. Adult clients are also required to attend two outside 12-step meetings each week. The parents of adolescent clients are required to attend various individual and group sessions with their child.

While the counselors at Foundation are familiar with co-occurring disorders, clients who need significant dual diagnosis support are referred to an outside mental health clinic for therapy and medication for their mental health diagnosis.

Extras

For aftercare, clients can attend a weekly relapse prevention group.

Optional family therapy is available for adult clients who would like their loved ones to take an active role in their recovery. Foundation for Multicultural Solutions also provides HIV/AIDS education and prevention classes as well as DUI education classes and assessments.

In Summary

Foundation for Multicultural Solutions has provided Tacoma’s Hispanic community with bilingual outpatient services for over a decade and a half. With family therapy and an adolescent program that requires active parental participation, Foundation is prepared to treat the conditions that allow substance abuse to be passed down from one generation to the next.
