Fort Health Care Review
Fort Health Care is a medical facility that offers an intensive outpatient chemical dependency program and was founded as a nonprofit hospital in 1949 in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Committed to helping clients gain power over drugs and alcohol, FHC focuses on recovery for the body, mind and spirit using individual and group therapy. The FHC vision statement is to “create the healthiest community in Wisconsin” and treatment is all evidence-based.
Fort Health Care has branches providing primary and specialty care in Fort Atkinson, Cambridge, Jefferson, Johnson Creek, Lake Mills and Whitewater, Wisconsin.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at FHC begins with an individualized treatment plan. An intake counselor performs a full assessment to determine each client’s treatment needs. The chemical dependency program starts with six weeks in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meeting three days per week, followed by a weekly recovery support group for 12 weeks. IOP treatment is a mixture of individual therapy and group counseling. Morning and evening group sessions are available to accommodate work and home-life schedules. The program is set up on a revolving participation basis, so clients can begin the program at any time.
FHC’s behavioral health team includes four counselors who utilize CBT, two psychiatrists and four CSWs.
Extras
Aftercare and relapse prevention programs are offered at Fort Health Care. These programs vary on a case to case basis, but include some ongoing variation of group and individual counseling. There is also a new “Telemental” program, wherein mental health services are provided over the phone. This allows clients to stay close to home, work and family while receiving high quality behavioral health care. An individual assessment determines if this program is appropriate for each client.
As part of a large healthcare network, clients have access to many other programs and services including primary care, pain management, weight management and treatment for stress and anxiety.

Fort Health Care’s mission is to provide the best outpatient treatment options possible for the community at large. Their behavioral health program offers highly structured, sliding scale outpatient treatment to those struggling with substance abuse issues. With scheduling flexibility and a unique “phone-in” treatment option, clients who are not at high risk for relapse are well-served.
