Located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the small town of Kill Devil Hills, Footprints in Recovery is a residential treatment facility available to men and women struggling with alcohol and/or drug abuse. Footprints offers an affordable, private experience that utilizes a mind-body-spirit approach to care with an emphasis on equine therapy and the 12-step model.
Accommodations and Food
Residents stay in a lovely home near a 20-acre horse farm. With only eight beds in a total of four shared rooms, Footprints fosters an intimate atmosphere and a tight-knit supportive community. In keeping with the principles of 12-step, peer support is considered an integral component in the recovery experience at Footprints. The house has comfortable furnishings, common areas and a billiards table in addition to indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and hot tub.
Residents are responsible for performing household chores as well as preparing meals together. While the menu is nutritious and tasty, individuals with dietary restrictions can be accommodated.
Treatment and Staff
Upon arrival, clients undergo an extensive intake assessment that includes a medical and psychological history. From this evaluation, the staff develops the best possible treatment plan customized to meet the specific needs of the individual. For clients in need of detox, Footprints works with local hospitals. While the facility provides a two-week program as well as 30 day, 60 day and 90 day options, the 90 day program is recommended and has the highest success rate.
Footprints offers a mind-body-spirit approach to care that seeks to heal the “whole person” rather than simply treating symptoms. As such, the facility integrates an array of therapeutic methods including equine therapy, holistic practices, recreation, drug testing and psychoeducation. Clients engage in weekly individual therapy and daily group therapy as well as family therapy every Saturday. There are also psychoeducation groups that focus on anger management, the disease of addiction, self-esteem, life skills and relapse prevention. Every night residents participate in a 12-steep meeting,
The Footprints team is comprised of counselors, addiction specialists and horse therapists. While medication management is not provided, co-occurring disorders are treated through weekly intensive individual therapy.
Footprints boasts multiple holistic options such as mindfulness meditation, yoga, music and art therapy. Residents also enjoy a multitude of recreational activities including hiking, biking canoeing, fishing and kayaking. They are strongly encouraged to keep a journal throughout the course of treatment.
Located in the beautiful, coastal and scenic Outer Banks of North Carolina, Footprints in Recovery provides comprehensive residential programming at an affordable price.
