Located in Brooklyn, New York, the Flatbush Addiction Treatment Center provides outpatient substance abuse and addiction services for men and women over 18. A branch of the Catholic Charities of Brooklyn and Queens, the facility has a history that began in 1899 with services for orphaned children. Now, they’ve grown to include affordable housing, two community centers and a center for pregnant women. Services for early childhood, families, older adults and those with developmental disabilities and behavioral problems are available across multiple locations in Brooklyn and Queens.
Treatment and Staff
To receive treatment, clients must have a diagnosis of substance abuse or chemical dependency. They must also demonstrate a willingness to participate in the recommended treatment practices and an ability to remain abstinent through outpatient care. Detox is not offered, so those frequently relapsing or in need of a higher level of care are referred to other programs.
Flatbush aims to help clients establish sobriety while continuing work, educational or parenting responsibilities. By the completion of the program, clients will reduce the negative consequences of their substance abuse, be able to implement new behaviors and operate with higher self-esteem in the community. Services are offered starting at 8:30 am Mondays through Fridays, with sessions ending at either 5 or 8 pm. The center is open on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm and closed on Sunday. There are four groups available daily, with frequency of attendance determined by the client’s needs and goals. A case manager works together with the client to establish a schedule as well as timeline for treatment.
Group therapy encourages clients to participate in discussions; learning healthy communication skills, anger management and relapse prevention techniques while benefiting from peer support. For those with co-occurring disorders, specialized support groups are held regularly. A staff doctor evaluates medical needs and provides medication management as additional dual diagnosis support. Facilitated by a licensed therapist, specific needs can be discussed weekly during individual therapy.
On-site AA and NA meetings are held each week, with clients encouraged to attend. They also receive health, alcohol and drug education with the goal of making positive future choices. Groups and classes meeting state requirements are available for clients with DWI charges.
Extras
Alternative treatments such as art therapy are incorporated along with group activities to encourage creativity and fun. Life skills training sessions teach vocational training, parenting and job seeking strategies. Additionally, community, housing and healthcare resources can be accessed through the CCBQ network.
