First StreetFirst Street Review

First Street is a 12-bed sober living residence for women located in the Schreiner University neighborhood in Kerrville, Texas about 60 miles north of San Antonio. Part of the House of Hope Foundation trio of three sober living houses in Texas, this large one-story stone, ranch-style structure provides the same safe, secure and clean environment that House of Hope strives for in all its facilities.

Accommodations and Amenities

In each of First Street’s four bedrooms, three residents bunk together in spacious carpeted spaces—the rest of the residence has hardwood floors. There are three bathrooms; two full-size ones on the second floor, one half bath off the downstairs kitchen. There are also two common living room spaces, a dining room, kitchen and laundry room. The kitchen is equipped with modern appliances and all dishes, silverware and cooking equipment is provided. The dining area is the main space where residents congregate together for a meal or a meeting.

The property is xeroscaped, which is a perfect drought-resistant solution during hot Texas summers, and lawn care is minimal. Amenities include TV and cable in the living room and a landline and desktop computer with Internet access in the den. Smoking is permitted, but only in the backyard. First Street’s location near Schreiner University gives residents easy access to classes (if they so choose), fitness centers and sports activities.

Rules and Regulations

Employment or regular volunteer service must be established within the first month of residency. In the first 90 days residents must attend 90 12-step meetings, after which the number goes down to five meetings each week. Within the first 30 days they must also get a sponsor. Curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Wednesdays and 1 am Fridays and Saturdays. House meetings, which are mandatory, are Wednesdays at 8 pm.

Each person is responsible for keeping their personal spaces clean as well as general house cleanliness. All kitchen utensils and appliances must be cleaned immediately after being used and put back where they belong. Visitors must be approved by the house manager. To go off-site, residents must submit a request for a pass. Drug testing is mandatory after off-site visits.

Physical and verbal conflicts, theft and any sort of disruptive or illegal activity are prohibited, and may result in eviction. Residents and their personal property are subject to inspection when there is reasonable suspicion of rule violation. The sound from television, music and even conversation must be maintained at a reasonable level. Residents must be awake and out of bed by 9 am each morning unless otherwise approved. Medications must be taken as prescribed, and rent is due the first of each month.

Extras

The Schreiner University neighborhood has plenty of shopping, cafes, bookstores and numerous other extracurricular activities.

In Summary

First Street has helped many women on their path to sobriety. Its structure and 12-step oriented environment is a proven example that a long-lasting healthy lifestyle is achievable. Those opposed to sharing a room or attending AA/NA meetings will want to look elsewhere, but First Street provides a positive, safe, and accountable environment to those seeking a path to a productive life.
