First Step of Sarasota Outpatient Review
First Step of Sarasota started its life in 1967 as the Sarasota Rehabilitation Program, in Sarasota, Florida. Today, First Step is a non-profit provider of low-cost substance abuse treatment. Outpatient offerings are among the more than 20 programs that First Step provides, in addition to detox and residential treatment. Outpatient treatment may be found at two First Step offices in Sarasota (the Manatee and the Sarasota office), one in Arcadia and one in Venice, Florida. First Step employs the 12-step principles in conjunction with evidence-based practices and offers services to those over 18 years old as well as a specialized adolescent program for those 13 to 18.
Treatment and Staff
To begin outpatient treatment, clients must come to a First Step office, Mondays through Thursdays between 9 am and 3 pm for a two-hour evaluation which determines the level of care. An individualized treatment plan is then created. All outpatient clients must go through detox before starting outpatient treatment, whether the detox takes place at First Step or elsewhere. Note that there is usually about a two-week wait-list for treatment in any First Step program.
During treatment, clients take part in individual, group and family therapy as well as substance abuse education classes. Outpatient programs typically run 12 to 16 weeks. Venice groups are offered all weekdays at 9 am or 4pm, for two-hour sessions. Arcadia runs groups Monday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30 pm. Sarasota offices also run evening group sessions on weekdays, while individual sessions are available at all locations depending on client’s need.
Those wishing to take part in First Step’s substance abuse treatment for adolescents will find it only at the Sarasota office. Parents are required to give consent and participate in their children’s treatment.
First Step offices are staffed by LCDCs, nurses and rehab technicians, depending on the location.
Extras
As part of its commitment to persons with disabilities, limited English proficiency and those who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, First Step of Sarasota has developed an Auxiliary Aids and Services Plan, which guides the organization when providing services.
In Summary
Apart from great options for residential treatment services, First Step of Sarasota also offers equivalent outpatient treatment. The longevity of the organization is a definite boon while the substantially low sliding scale cost, based on clients’ income, may be the deciding factor for those in need of outpatient substance abuse treatment services.
