First Step Counseling Review
First Step Counseling is an outpatient facility in Parker, Colorado that also serves adults in Arapahoe, Douglas and Elbert Counties. First Step caters to clients though education and traditional therapy for substance abuse and DUI troubles. Treatment is evidence based and is available through group and individual therapy.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment at First Step Counseling, clients must go through a two-step intake process. This begins with an in-depth online intake form followed by an in-person assessment with a staff member. The facility offers different levels of care depending on the severity of each client’s addiction (or if the client is a first-time or repeat DUI offender). Regardless of the program they are placed in, clients can create flexible class schedules to accommodate work, home and life commitments.
Substance abuse classes and seminars are held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings in two-hour blocks. Group counseling is offered four evenings a week for two hours and a relapse prevention specific group is scheduled once a week. Most clients attend one of these groups a week for several months. Individual counseling is available on an as-needed basis, usually once a month.
Programs at First Step Counseling offer elements of the 12 steps in addition to prevention techniques. If a client is at the facility because of multiple DUI convictions, the facility can then provide resources and referrals to more intensive or residential treatment programs. Experienced LADCs and therapists operate the facility.
Extras
Staff at First Step Counseling are able to provide regular drug tests to fulfill court-ordered requirements. In addition, the facility also works with clients who are in need of vocational placement after completing the program.
In Summary
Treatment at First Step Counseling caters mostly to those who are court-ordered into treatment and consists of fairly basic services. Still, the result of these programs is that clients emerge with greater knowledge of the disease of addiction and new tools to live a life of sobriety. In all, First Step Counseling is worth considering for those in need of lower intensity outpatient care.
